new observatory

Hi Guys

I am finally getting around to building the new observatory. :-)

I have between 4 and 5 meters by 3 to 4 meters to play with. Since i have the space I would like to have all my books and space stuff in the observatory (instead of in boxes as they are now) so I need to avoid the dew problem with a fully open roof all night. A split roof with some permanent and some roll off would be an ideal solution.

Obviously the bigger the observatory the heavier the roof so this is also a consideration and ideally I want to go with a flat? roll off, but i am wondering has anyone had (or knows of) a split system where part of the roof is permanent and the rest is roll off over or under the permanent roof. How do you solve the water rain drainage issue in such a system?

Any suggestions?

cheers
Karen

Hi Karen & congratts on your deciding to build an Ob's

Attached is a pic of the bigginings of my Obs, nothing Flash but is strong and serves the purpose very well. as can see I had decided to go with a flat style roof but with a small pitch to deal with rain water, not to complicated to build, and can note the corigations run down hill for rain flow.
Also of note, is the High end of the Obs is facing South, pitched lower than the South Cellest Pole so I dont miss any of the Great target in the polar region, and accordingly the lower side facing North which allows viewing range to catch the targets there, lower to the horizon !
I have built a two piece roof for two reasons, A) Lighter to handle ! B) I can have one side open and other side closed when viewing East or Visa-versa. Infact, i seldom have either fully open as I try to have open just enough to view/photo through, thou need to adjust during longer image sessions, this helps reduce due forming in the obs during the night since this is my Obs away from home, Dark Sky Location, I have a camp bed in there which is against the western wall, there it seldom gets wet from due, not such a pleasure during cold winter weekends ect , I mention this as referance/idea with your bookshelving, just some thoughts for this !
In addition with moisture condensing on things, I suggest you have a reasonable material for your book shleving, bare partical or bare MDF board wont stand up to heavy moisture, so I good coat of Paint would do the trick in this case ! The good thing is, that due normally only reaches areas directly under open air, so if you have a top shelf cover then everything under it should be fine ,, maybe a curtain or similar infront of the shelving, just to be on the safe side : )
Hope this is of help and there are many ways to addapting your own obs to suit your own needs, & wish you all the best with it all ,,

Hi

Thanks for the reply. another great idea to consider - thanks for the tips on the Dew as well I was thinking permanent cover for that and since i will butt up the observatory against the garage and a fence i can only roll off one end unless i come out further into the yard (great for observing but not for the year aesthetics!). - How do you get the join in the middle to be waterproof?

I think the join in the middle needs to be some sort of overlap maybe with a bit of rubber seal and/or channel to trap and direct any water out along the roof slope direction.

Hi Karen,

I am half way thru building my obs. which is a faily flat roof with 2 seperate sections that will roll back onto the other half of the roof.

Some pics of my progress is here.

I have a 50mm fall from top to bottom (looking at the last pics).

If you can put a partition in, you can have a warm area where you can setup an office type area and an area for the telescope. Probably need to go atleast 5x4m or 4x4m to have room. I have 6m diameter so putting a partition in across the middle. My openings are 2.4m^2.

Cheers

Yes, Just an overlapp of the corrigated Roofing iron, the wheel sets on each half have a small difference in height, only 2-3mm, which allow the weight of one roof half to rest on the other, ie, the lower half goes over the top of the higher half ! odd, but works well since I have also trimmed the lower roof half sheet by 5mm so when they meet, the lower half can climb over the other when closing ! Havent needed to add any rubber seal as they fit very snugg as this type of roofing is also rather springy !

Hope this is understandable ,,
