James' picture is only part of the story, so for PC users that default to limited hops use
tracert -h 80 216.81.59.173
to get the full story.

MAC users can just
traceroute 216.81.59.173

i.e.
On the PC go to the command prompt or Start/Run/ cmd
and then type in
tracert -h 80 216.81.59.173

On the Mac just open terminal under Applications/Utilities
and then type in
traceroute 216.81.59.173

You have not got to 216.81.59.173 so can you increase the max TTL?

I get as far as

10 ae-1.r07.snjsca04.us.bb.gin.ntt.net (129.250.5.53) 194.168 ms 194.767 ms 196.039 ms
11 * * *

and that's it.

If you don't get to the end, you miss out on the keyhole challenge.

try this if you are timing out.

tracert -w 900 -h 80 216.81.59.173

Last edited by Poita; 21-02-2013 at 12:27 PM. Reason: fix tracert command

Win7 does not like that syntax. -d doesn't take a value.

It appears that my ISP uses different routing and I'm not getting responses past ntt.net. Maybe someone screws up TTLs so I'll double the max. I've tried both windows and Linux.

By the way, the hint says windows tracert won't help you solve the keyhole problem.

That is correct re the puzzle.

sorry I meant -w 900 not -d 900

I'm on a mac, so am using traceroute which just works, I'm going from memory re Windows tracert commands.

The trace I threw up was from Pipe looking glass portal as am not able to do direct traces from work infra (proxies, etc).

Geoff, there are geeks and geeks. You've run into a few network ones who find this 1) uber-geekish, and 2) amusing.
