Atik Waxing Moon, 31st Jan 2013

Hi All,

I was mucking around the other night and thought I might try the Atik CCD on the moon when it rose to see what it is like on planetary.

I left the CLS filter on, but this sent the histogram towards red as I think there is a lot of Infrared bouncing off the Moon's surface from the sunlight.

So, here is some of Luna as the Atik 314L+ sees it through my Skywatcher 200mm reflector on the HEQ5 Pro.

120 x 0.008sec subexposures (8/1000ths of a sec each), captured in Artemis Capture, stacked in Registax 6 and processed in PS CS3 and Nebulosity 3.

Link here to 5 Mb PNG uncompressed image

Cheers

Chris

Nice, Chris. But I don't think lunar/planetary is the Atik's forte. It definitely excels on deep sky!

Its sharp, Chris, but it does have a pinkish cast, at least on my computer. To my eye, it doesn't look quite right-I can't put my finger on exactly why-maybe processing?
I love the camera on deep sky stuff, and you are getting great results with it. But I think the dedicated lunar/planetary cameras are better at lunar/planetary imaging-horses for courses?
Please don't think I am criticising your work-I am just passing an opinion.

No Offense taken Laurie,

It did have a reddish cast to it because of no IR filter on the camera and the CLS filter was on there too.

I processed it to adjust to have less red, it might be that, or it could be the sharpening as well.

I tend to "wing it" until it looks right, so it may just be my taste that looks funny.

I appreciate the feedback, its a good sanity check

Thanks mate

Chris

I intend to get a 314L myself, after seeing the results you are getting, Chris. Just need some more money! God, this hobby eats it up until you finally get the set-up you want.
Since I'm a novice at digital imaging, I hope you won't mind if I ask for your advice when I eventually buy one.

Good choice Laurie , I to have one of these as well , easy to use and very well made .
I will post some photos soon , when I get better at using it and the weather clears ,, .

I like this image Chris , it has so much detail , especially the un-compressed version .
