Crossing the Pentecost River

This series of 3 images shows some 4WD’s doing the river crossing of the Pentecost River with the Cockburn Range in the background.

I guess it’s a fairly stereotypical tourist brochure type shot, but the group of us got excited every time a 4WD came by to cross the river

#1 was captured with a 200mm lens, f/2.8, ISO800, 1/400s exposure.

#2 was with the 24-105mm lens @ 40mm, ISO500, f/8, 1/100s exposure.

#3 is a 3-frame panorama (vertical), shot with the 200mm, f/8, ISO500, 1/200s exposure.

That's not exciting (you can see their headlights). That's washing the tyres.

In the last photo you can see the track going off to the left which leads to some camping spots. That's where in 1988 Joseph Schwab murdered some campers - one of a series of murders he committed before dying in a shoot-out with police. We stayed there about a year later and, even though we knew he was dead, it was one of the creepiest night I can remember.

You're right David, but it was still better than nothing. We got water in most of the water falls and plenty at Mitchell Falls which was what we really wanted.

I remember the name of the river ... I wonder if it goes through the Kununurra-El Questro area?

The first river crossing we did, I freaked out (quitely, inside my head). My wife was driving, she's trained in 4x4, and it was only some time later it emerged that I was freaked out and she had no idea, thought it was quite a easy river crossing and didn't think anything of it In our case water came over the bonnet briefly.

That river is just near El Questro.
