Yes Phil, we being not that bright down here in Australia, none of us have yet considered watching the eclipse from two of the better known beaches on the Cairns coast or any beaches for that matter.
The attached pic was taken at Yorkey's Knob Beach on Nov 12, 2010 at 6:40 am local (time of totality). The wet sand high tide mark is 2.3m. That is spot on 2.3m the height of the water at totality. The other two lines drawn on the pic are my guesstimates - and I stress 'guesstimate' of the location of the waterline based on my eyeballing of the lie of the land. The waterline at C4 will be 2.5-2.7m and 3.06m at 9am. However you can enjoy the eclipse from the water as seen in the other photo. Also, Yorkey's Knob blocks the view to the west to a high altitude.
I won't be there. Would you take a picture for me at C4 and 9am as I'd like to know how close my guess is.
