God particle is 'found' ?

Quote:
God particle is 'found': Scientists at Cern expected to announce on Wednesday Higgs boson particle has been discovered
Quote:
Scientists 'will say they are 99.99% certain' the particle has been found
Leading physicists have been invited to event - sparking speculation that Higgs boson particle has been found
'God Particle' gives particles that make up atoms their mass
Found this in a article on the Mail online website anyone know more?? is it true?

Wow. That article, dated 1/7/12, looks like an exact rip-off of this article dated 14/12/11.

Yep, CERN have announced a press conference tomorrow as shown in the following link:

http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisp...&confId=196564

No mention of the particle being found though, just the latest update on what has been going on. Could be interesting though. Stay tuned to this space...

The article dated 14/12/11 says they have found "some data" the new one is calming they have "99.99 % found it", maybe its to good to be true?

Aah, re-read them. Much of the preamble and content is overlapped, though.

Well, there is a significant delay between the experiments that generate the data, and the conclusion of analysis and cross-checks that lead to a particle being "discovered" with the appropriate degree of certainty.

I guess i'll check the news on Thursday (our time). Thanks for the tip.

I agree they overlap in describing the higgs and CERN, but the the actual points vary a lot (well to me anyway)

Quote:
They said the experiments produced some evidence of the Higgs boson - but not enough to conclusively prove its existence.
Quote:
Scientists at the Large Hadron Collider are expected to say they are 99.99 per cent certain it has been found - which is known as 'four sigma' level.
I also note the first is fact and the 2nd is "expected" and not yet fact. Its a pretty big comment making out it is true, just hope CERN are not going down the "Much Ado About Nothing" big news discovery path, like NASA dose

Given that Tevatron has announced that they have seen evidence of the Higgs in the same search region as the LHC between the masses of 115 and 135 GeV I'd say it's a well timed announcement.
It's not like scientists are very competetive.
Still Fermilab/Tevatrons announcement was as close as they could get without confirmation which really backs up the December announcement made by CERN.

Quote:
Tom LeCompte, a scientist at Argonne National Lab who works at Cern and knows the results, said he was confident the Higgs would be shown to exist, or not exist, this year. But he would not disclose if the findings scheduled to be unveiled on Wednesday would be definitive.
So I'm going to guess that they will claim evidence that "A" Boson most likely the Higgs has been found to exist but further research is needed too confirm it is the Higgs.

Ahhhh.... nothing like a good cup of speculation in the morning.

This is also a very good article explaining the difference between a "result" and a "discovery" http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-18677808

that link says: no longer available.
here's possibly the same one on youtube?

I'm excited! yay!

Turns out, I am not overweight. I only have too many bosons!
my next diet goal: reduce my boson mass index

Don't get too excited yet, I imagine a call as big as this one will get some pretty close scrutiny. The discoverers will definately be reaching for their boxing gloves and will be in for a hell of a time.

Ah sigh..I can see the two camps already - the Higgs alarmists and the Higgs skeptics, luckily no money or political party is attached to the truth for the average man or else scientific method and reasoning would just simply go flying out the window ...bring on the barbs and vitriol

Hi all

For those that are keen Brian Greene (Elegant Universe) provided a link to the live announcement.

http://worldsciencefestival.com/even...ouncement/main

Plus - there is some really good explanations, articles video etc.. of the science behind the LHC and the Higgs.

Cheers Petra d.

Ok. Plenty of time then. One way or the other it's going to be exciting.
PS: Is Apple sponsoring the event. Geez... that's all there is on the desks.
