sun dog day afternoon - 30062012 a Circumzenithal arc

taken this afternoon while Al was visiting - he pointed it out

Nicely captured, but I have never seen sun dogs that shape before. The sun dogs that I've seen look to be 180 degrees apart and are the bright spots that lie at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock on a circle surrounding the Sun. What you observed seems to be curved outwards wrt the Sun.

Actually you are quite correct here is what it actually is - i should have looked it up in the first place its a Circumzenithal arc

Great pictures Dave the camera has picked these up really well ,it was hard to see clearly with the sun so close ,but there were so many just appearing right before us in such a different cloud formation as well

I saw an email recently where they call this a 'fire rainbow'. Never heard it called that before but I know it is rare. Nice shots and congratulations on catching it!
