Smile nebula :-) NGC3199

Dear all, in the link below is a new HaOIIIRGB image from Coona, NGC 3199, another interesting object set in a very rich star field:

http://www.glitteringlights.com/Imag...VrSJ&lb=1&s=X3

This time I didn't collect as much light as I usually do for other images, in particular on Ha and OIII, however, apart from a little noise higher than usual (I stretched a lot the narrowband trying to reveal all subtle nebular details), I am quite pleased with the result. It is quite interesting IMHO the interaction between OIII and Ha emissions on NGC3199 that produces a peculiar coloration of the nebula.

Details are on the related page.

I hope you will enjoy the view

Clear skies
Marco

Nice field Marco. Interesting and very colourful. Did you blend the Oiii in the blue channel and Ha in the red. What ratio do you usually use?

That's a beauty and nicest I have seen of this area. It has the same sort of colour as the witch head nebula.

I have data of this one (among several objects) that I haven't processed yet. I'll have to get off my proverbial.

Greg.

This is a unique view Marco...I don't think I have seen this framing before nor the contrasting grey blue/purple in NGC 3199 - nice look

Lovely shot of the smile and the object I call the whirling dervish nebula..NGC 3247

( you have to rotate your image 90 deg counterclockwise to see the whirling dervish)

Thanks Marc! I don't use to blend Ha and/or OIII directly to a channel. What I do instead in PS is to add to the RGB a layer with the narrowband monochrome image, add a clipping mask "Hue and Saturation" on the narrowband, than check "colorize" box, set hue (Ha=350 OIII=192), saturation (100%), luminosity (-50) and than change the blending of the monochrome (now colorized) to "lighten". You can than experiment with curves and even retouching the hue of the narrowband you are adding to find the result that better matches your taste and goals.
That gives a much better control on the addition of NB to RGB..
You can see this technique described in several places in the net, (here is a good tutorial, I use lighten instead of screen for blending).
Hope this help

Hello Marco,

The bright patch of nebulosity on the left hand side of your image, which seems to be the brightest part of a much larger nebular complex, is known as RCW 49. It is accompanied by the distant supermassive star cluster Westerlund 2.

The compact distant cluster is small in your image, but visible.

I present various images of Westerlund 2 in my recent thread in the science forum:
http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...50#post1074450
(note also that there is an accompanying thread giving details about the cluster)

Best regards,
Robert Lang
