Thought you might like to see the difference between what I get with the Canon EOS300D now modified (Colour/IR Filter removed) and before modification, pictures of M42 taken Before/after Mods.(un-modded Pix last year), I like the unmodded colours, but also like the modded Pix. imporved Ha sensitivity showing extended nebulosity (havent been able to get the Blue colour back into ngc1977 though), still learning re processing.
Both Pix taken with an ED80 Scope guided by an LX200, unmodded Pix 2 x 6 Min. DF removed, modded Pix. 4 x 6 Min. DF removed, both ISO-800.
Yeah same here Dave ! although It's obvious that the moded is more sensitive . This taking the IR filter out has always baffled me because with my CCD camera I need to use one otherwise I end up with corrupted colours . Anyway they still both look good Jim .
You are only after H alpha so it might be worthwhile using a UV/IR blocking filter. Otherwise you only end up recording the heat from your feverish brow as you peer down the optic. Only joking!
Any UV present (light pollution from Hg/Na lamps)will also drown out a weak blue signal from a reflection nebula such as the running man.
Nice comp. One thing that did spring to mind (and bear in mind I currently own a modded 300D) is that one shot was 2x6min, the other 4x6min. It would be good to have both exposure similar or the same. Nit picking? Me? OK, just a little.

I have to agree with Gary, the time frames do not compare well. That said I do like the unmodded image colour, although more nebulosity is present in the Modded, time frame disparity aside.

Thanks for all the comments, and yes I realise there was a 2 x time difference in addition of pictures, but its all I could dig up for a comparison, and two more exposures of the unmodded picture added, would make no difference to the colour and definition, no colour adjustment was made to the modded picture, Im trying CWB (custom white balance) hopefully that will do the trick while still showing the increased Ha sensitivity, Ive tried UV/IR block Filters, made no difference to the All Red effect, there will be an answer, Anyway this type of Astrophotography using an uncooled conventional Camera, but with that LARGE 6 Mp Chip is the way to go, and im more than happy with the results by comparison to the cooled MX7C with the 470 K approx. CCD chip, which I now use for guiding, it is however better on small faint objects (galaxies, nebula Etc.) Horses for courses ??, Ill post the results of the CWB Pix shortly.
