Brian is right. Check out Jaycar, their Cat. No. MP3490, regulated 12V, 2.5Amp switchmode plugpack. $29.95. I use one to drive my HEQ5 mount.

Really?? I showed the guy there the one I am after below and he goes, yep we have one and it was $69.95 so it must have been another product, it looked like a laptop power pack.

Is there a difference between the 2.5Amp and 1.5Amp products?

Could I use any old extension cord or do I need a specific one?

Thanks heaps guys, I will buy one of these then when I am deeper in my garden and have no access to power ill grab the jump starter!

The difference is 1Amp! Seriously though, the high capacity units just give you a it more leeway in power. I run my Nexstar 6SE off a 1Amp unit quite comfortably. I downloaded and had a look at the specs. for your 130SLT and it states you only need 750mA. (ie 3/4 Amp.) so the Jaycar pack would be more than adequate for you.

No problem with plugging into an extension cord as long as it fits OK into the socket. Shove the connection inside a modded plastic bottle to keep it dry.

Pretty sure you need the 3.5mm tip positive. Chechk the manual and also the panel near the plug.

You use the one that fits. I think it's the largest diameter plug and has a dark-blue insulating ring. When you attach it to the lead, make sure you match the + symbols moulded onto the side of the plug and socket where you connect them. (The socket on the end of the wire where you connect the plug is actually marked + TIP .) This will ensure you have the centre pin positive. If you have any doubts, if you have or can borrow a multi-meter then check to make sure.

Hi Stefan,

I recently acquired a Celestron 130-SLT, and also have the manual.
Appendix A of the manual informs that the 12v power supply only requires 750mA (which sounds about right, since it's only taking the place of the 8 AA batteries which last quite a while themselves).

Most small 12v adapters are 1.0A or 1.25A with a 2.1mm plug, and would work fine. I have a few of these spare (from modems/routers etc), and you're welcome to to pick one up if you live in Melbourne.
