Sunset 14 image mosaic

Here is a sunset mosaic I took over Easter.

Just outside of Reids Flat in NSW. 14 image mosaic, Canon 40D, Nikon 24-70 F2.8 ED with Novoflex adapter.

Yes I guess that would be a lot of resolution.141 mp worth.

The largest I have done so far is 24 images in a mosaic.

I am leaning towards doing fewer and using a wider lens like my 14-24mm Nikon. At 14mm though there is some curvature. Even though I have shot a lot of mosaics I am not sure about the ideal setup yet. I do get the occassional failure that requires extensive stitching which is a pain.
But that was mainly one where the zoom was zoomed in rather than out wide.

I don't think the 14-24 is the ideal beast for panos - too much curvature. I've had good results with the 24-70, especially if I turn it portrait orientation and pay attention to keeping the camera pointing level to the horizon.

I saw an amazing vertical pano done with a 50mm lens at a workshop. He shot it at f8 or 11, started shooting at his feet, and worked his way up to the sky. He was standing on a cliff, looking down to the water, across a bay and up the shore on the other side. He refocused for each shot and the depth of field at f8/11 meant the image stitched together very well. The resulting distortion was far less than I expected.

I usually use the 24-70 and it works lovely. As you say portrait orientation helps as sometimes sky shots if they don't have any land in it won't stitch easily automatically.

I have a couple of 50mm lenses. I should try it out.

Yes handheld. The whole thing took about 1 minute to setup camera and take the pano.

I've done quite a few lately. I had my quad bike down at my property and zoomed around dirt roads from one vantage point to the next racing against the oncoming dusk to get several panoramas. I took about 10 panoramas in about 40 minutes and covered about 10kms!
