Orion's got a brand new belt

Taken near Alta, Norway. It's not my best aurora shot, but I did like the presence of Orion, Taurus and the Pleiades. Around here Orion is a southern constellation!

Very nice indeed, though everything seems to be upside down

Thanks, JJJ! It would have been nice to arrive a couple of days earlier for the really big display we just missed, but there's been some activity and clear skies every night so far, so we certainly can't complain. It is a very beautiful place indeed!

Lucky indeed, thanks H0ughy. I'm still not sure how I talked my wife into it

Thanks, Simon. Weird, isn't it! Fred Watson, who is leading the tour, told a story about heading down to Oz to do some observing. He looked out the window of the plane and freaked out thinking he'd got the dates wrong and was arriving with the moon at first quarter instead of last quarter! The other really odd thing is that the moon and planets don't rise, move across the sky, and then set. They just wander around the horizon...

Had personal matters not been in my way, I'd be there on that tour with you Rick - I fully intended to be. Please say hi to Fred and Marnie from Chris & the gang at MAS

Great shot. Reminds me last time I went to my dark site there was an extra bright star. I looked at it puzzled for a second then saw it was merely a satellite flash which then faded after a while.

Greg.

Man, what a sight the aroras must be live ? Great amount in your capture too, fantastic.
The closest I see similar would be a good meteor train/trail lasting a few mins : )

That's a shame, Chris. It would have been great to have a fellow IISer on the tour! I will pass on your regards to Fred and Marnie.

Thanks, Greg. We had a fantastic display last night. It's the first time I've seen the lights "dance".

Thanks, Kev. There have been some much better nights since. Once I get a chance to sort out my photos I will post a few more.
