SCP startrail

Still playing with my NEX-5 when weather allows. This was taken Friday night. Thanks to Alex C. I now shoot in raws and finally got some star colors. 30s subs at ISO800 from my backyard. If you check the larger version (center top) you'll see a bright red path.

It is also in the small animated GIF here. Its motion is quite erratic for a plane or satellite. It was just before sunrise so I'm inclined to think a weather ballon? It moved quite slowly over a period of 8min. I was asleep so no red torch light painting or reflection of any kind

What do you reckon?

Hi Marc,

Great looking star trail.

Photo reminds of the "Time Tunnel".

I was doing a small cleanout on the weekend and I found some old film star trails I had shot about 10 years ago.

Thanks.

Ross.

Nice shots, Marc

As for a weather balloon, I don't think so. Not so erratic a path as that. Once they get caught in a mid to upper level wind they tend to follow it along, not bob up and down all over the place. It could be someone playing with a red laser somewhere nearby, who knows.

Nice trails! Could it be a helicopter? Maybe Hagar was playing around in your area?

Nice work, Marc!
I find NEX5 gives better colour in RAW files than D700.

Thanks Ross. You'll have to show me those old films of yours sometime.

Thanks Leon. It is puzzling yes. I might start a UFO conspiracy.

Thanks Carl. Over 8min? That would require a lot of patience and it was moving very slow.
