Great stories every one.
I've got most of the strange animal noise worked out these days but one night when it was very still I started to hear a pulsating hum (it's hard to describe the sound)
I never heard this sound before and my mind was half expecting a close encounter of the third kind.
It turned out to be the rotation of the blades from the wind farm about 25km away. Now I hear on a still night and I'm not so worried, would have preferred to meet ET though.

I'm loving these stories.
Army ants...brrrr. Ever since I saw The Nun's Story I've been traumatised at the thought of them.

We were out at Tinaroo Dam, Cairns hinterland. About 3 AM Dark after moon set. Snorts and grunts. LOUD. Coming from near the truck.
Feral Pigs. I didn't know if they were dangerous. I froze. After what seemrd like an eternity, maybe a half hour they moved on.
Dawn was approaching and I checked the area. They had been fossicking in the damp earth.
Here's the real scary story:
The Drop Bear, Thylarctos plummetus, is a large, arboreal, predatory marsupial related to the Koala.
There you go David: Dropbears? No one's mentioned the ferocious dropbears?
Have a look on this site: http://australianmuseum.net.au/Drop-Bear
Back in the 80's Aussie soldiers had the Yanks so convinced of Drop Bears that they would avoid walking under trees at night.
Their eyes glued to the sky.
(One way of getting the non believers to look up)
Cheers

I saw DavidU had posted, and was expecting to read:
"I was out observing with Bono, the Dalai Lama, Mick Jagger and Simon Le Bon, when Joe Satriani called and said he couldn't make it. It was cool though, because Carlos Santana came instead"

I remember running with my brother being chased by a mum wild boar and her flock of little ones. We were with kids playing soccer and kicked the ball in the wood nearby. She probably felt threatened and bolted out the bush. Man I never run that fast again.

Hey was that in France in what was ancient Gaul like in Asterix? I loved those Boar feats at the end...and Obelix and his super human strength, part of the early longings and why I was so determined to become the World's Strongest Man...ah, I never quite realised that height of course but Obelix had a lot to do with how far I did get.

I could not think of anything more scary than Strongmanmike sneaking up while on me while gazing into the eyepiece of the scope to give me a big (bear) hug

Suddenly............a menacing hush befell the African plains.....even the crickets fell silent............. I all at once became aware of the fact that there was a seething, vicious, predator on the prowl in the dark African night closing in on me......I froze on the spot..........too afraid to move, lest I become the prey of the night.........I saw the ugly face, the intense gaze from fiery eyes, the steam from the nostrils like a Wildebeest on the run........then it happend.......
All I remember hearing was: "It's your turn to wash the dishes so you better get your lazy butt back here before you start playing with your bl&&$y toys and get your chores done. Why do I always have to do everything around here and pick up after you lazy, goodfernuthin' slobs....and by the way, don't forget to take out the garbage and your new little puppy dog has pooped in the passage so you'd better get some cleaning stuff and sort it out............I was traumatised.
Frankly, I'd prefer to get eaten by a real lion or trampled by an elephant....at least it'll only happen once and that'll be that.......

I've had roo shooters tear over the hill towards us with spotlights and shotties at the ready near Lake Eppalock in the late 1980's.

One night while observing about 60km East of Adelaide, it was quite a dark night and everything was sill. I was observing alone in a farmers paddock. About 2am all I heard was what sounded like a stampede of biblical proportions, which sounded like it was coming straight for me, scared the hell out of me. All of a sudden it stopped and it fell silent again. I plucked up courage and wandered over to where the sound was coming from, trying to make sense of the ground in front of me in the darkness. I reached a fence, then all of a sudden I had the huge dark figure move right up next to me from the other side of the fence. I then could make out it was about 6 Clydesdale horses, all HUGE! Chatted a while with them, and went back to observing....

Last year I was outside my observatory (1,900m elev.) without a light during a mid-winter snowstorm and became disoriented, losing the track and almost going over the 1,500m vertical drop. And the scary part is that it's not the first time I've almost done that. But I'm not a moron.
