iPad - Stellarium App

Does anyone have/use the Stellarium App for iPad?

If so, how does it compare to the Windows version?

There are far better apps than Stellarium on iOS Which are still either free or near to it. It's still half baked. Night vision doesn't work and it's full of little problems and glitches. It's not built by the same team who built the Win/OSX/Linux desktop application. Although it works, I've deleted it from my devices and use any of the other fifteen or so planetarium apps I have installed.

Thanks Chris,

I have Stellarium installed (but not set up) on my Windows 2007 based 10" tablet computer but that computer takes "a month of Sundays" to boot.

It would be good to be able to take the iPad outside, look up and know what I'm looking at.

There are lots and lots of planetarium apps for iOS Henry - and ALL of them are better than Stellarium.

On my iPad/iPhone I run:

SkySafari Pro (my favourite, but the free and near-free versions are great too)
StarmapHD
Star Charts
SpaceMap
PocketUniverse
Distant Suns
SkyScan
Planisphere
Luminos
Redshift
AstroPlanner
SkyORB
S&T SkyWeek

and many others including a dozen or so moon/sun/planetary specialised apps as well. Do I need them all? No. They all too things differently, and I like to study their individual user interface design attributes.

On my iPad I've ended up sticking with Redhift, I far far prefer it to Stellarium.

As stated earlier The Ipod version of Stellarium is not part of the Stellarium project. Someone used the modified source to make an Ipod version which has caused a lot of problems. The Stellarium development team has no agenda to make Ipod, Ipad, Android etc. versions. If you see any applications in these areas they are nothing to do with stellarium.

SkySafari 3 Plus or Pro is where its at. For us who use it for the sky charts, it is simply spectacular!

Thanks for the confirmation Barry. I do remember you saying that Stellarium is developed in Linux then ported to other platforms.

Thank you to the other people who replied. At this stage, I maybe buying the iPad Tuesday, hopefully setting it up Wednesday morning, buying a sim card Wednesday afternoon, and sometime after that I'll start looking around for what Apps to put on it.

Avoid Stellarium on the iPad

Stellarium for the iPad is basically not worth using. In comparison, I use the Windows version all the time and think it is fantastic.

I have a number of astronomy apps on my iPad and would recommend SkySafari most of all.

Regards,

Paul Floyd.

SkySafari might be good but it's not cheap. I haven't taken my telescope outside in over a year. Hopefully I'll get around to it one day.

I have a Windows 7 based Leader 10 tablet computer with an old version of Stellarium on it. I think I'll just uninstall it and install the latest version of Stellarium. At least the Leader tablet might get some useand I get to save some money.
