Cloud base needs sci-fi novel distraction

I am fed up with this cumulus. Even buying the third hand newt off IIS failed to make the clouds dissipate.
So I am an avid reader. I have found myself returning to the same books I have had for years- so I yearn for literary distraction.
Just to put some stuff in here as it might end up as the best Sci-Fi books ever
I have read (re-read)
Some early Ian Banks Culture novels
The Forever war Joe Haldeman
Connie Willis's "Dooms day book and 'to say nothing of the dog' both excellent literary time travel stories.
Footfall, and 'the mote in gods eye' niven and pournelle I think
I need others-
I am not into the iron orchid or middle earth stuff.
suggestions please for the best Sci Fi stuff I can read
Thanks
Graham

Hi,

Try "Hyperion" by Dan Simmons. It goes on in a series, the "Cantos", but that first one I thought the best.

Cheers

I've only read Red Mars so far and I loved it.

I'm a serious Heinlein fan. I read his entire body of work every year. His juveniles are great fun "Have Spacesuit...Will Travel" being my favourite.
"Stranger in a Strange Land" "Starship Troopers" "Door Into Summer" "Time Enough For Love" " The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" etc etc
All easy to read and quite thought provoking too.
He was the Dean of Science Fiction during the Golden Age. Up there with Asimov and Clarke. He transitioned well into the Space Era. Sure his science is dated, but for a jolly Space Opera, you can't go past him.

And for space opera there's the classic EE Doc Smith's Lensman series.
Other series I particularly enjoyed were David Feintuch's Hope series and the Dorsai trilogy (not Feintuch's).

Any books by Peter F. Hamilton (except nights dawn trilogy) or Alaistar Reynolds.
