M16 Ha PixInsight Test Now with PS added

Hi, just trying PI for the first time to see if i can get my head around it

M16 over 3 nights 21 X 10 min 7nm Ha with 25 x 5 min Ha flipped taken with Tak 106N at F5 on EQ6 guided with ST80 via PHD with DSI 2 pro
Calibrated with scaled darks no flats.

Followed this guide http://www.astral-imaging.com/pix_in...a_new_user.htm as well as some of Harry's vids

Any comments welcome as i need to learn this stuff

Just did a quick Maxim align and stack then Photoshop curves/levels and some unsharp masking, nothing special as i'm still learning the basics, to see if there's much difference. Not a lot to me.
I think for me i'll stick with the ones i've got and learn them before getting yet another program, as good as PI is.

Looks great for a first processing effort Marcus

One thing I find I have to watch with PI is that it decodes your files right way up. I often find I have a mirror image left/right or up/down. I think you may be flipped there at the moment for M16.

It looks like you are off to a flying start with PI. That is a great image.

I am learning it as well. So far I see for me its main use would be the mosaic tools and perhaps the dynamic background extraction tool.
Although I used it the other day and compared the results with Gradient Xterminator. Gradient Xterminator did a better job but I am not 100% sure I used DBE properly so I am not able to really draw a conclusion yet.

Certainly Gradient Xterminator is way easier to use and understand.
But I am looking for an additional gradient tool for troublesome gradients which is a common problem for the largest camera chips.

Nice shot - very clean as far as I can see

I have a similar set up - your image gives me another target to try my hand at

Keep us informed on how you go with PI. I'm yet to take that step but I suspect its not far off

Have you tried using ABE (automatic background extraction) Greg? It's pretty smart, and rarely can I do any better with DBE's fine control. Just drag and drop the icon on your image and BANG. I rarely use flats any more even though my system is prone to quite a bit of vignetting. They rarely correct as well and add a little noise sometimes. I find ABE is usually a formidable weapon against gradients too - you can do more than one pass if need be. Then again, I've never used Gradient Exterminator, so I have to make that clear.

p.s. Once you starting ducking into PI to use a few favourite tools it gradually has a way of taking up more of the processing I find, until PS is just for tweaks at the end (if any). All very personal though I accept.
