Thanks for looking.

An excellent series Frank. I’ve seen the automated timers on the web and I’m very impressed with these photos, taken just using the gear that Mother Nature provided you with! You must have good hand-eye coordination!

Cheers

Hi Frank,

Thanks for posting this wonderful series both in this thread and in your other threads.

Images like these that catch nature in the act never cease to amaze and these are
certainly in the tradition of the Father of high speed imaging, the late great Harold "Doc" Edgerton.

The MIT Edgerton Center web site here -

and the Edgerton Digital Collection here -

which includes a wonderful short 2 minute video that celebrates the legendary Engineer.

Frank, the stuff you've posted here although awesome is not even close to some of the shots you have on your website in the liquid section. I find those pics fascinating.

Couple of questions:

Do you shoot a series of high speed shots then chose the best in the sequence or do you have a very precise timing trigger to take the shot? I mean you never know what you're going to get right? Or do you have a way to repeat the shapes you get on impact?

Do you have these drops bounce off a very shallow surface of water or deeper layer?

Top stuff any way you look at it.

Great shots Frank , I thought flash would be needed to freeze the movement or did You use flash?.

Thanks

Thanks everyone!
Been experimenting some more today. Might have some more coming soon!

Zane Yes I use a Flasjh, A Nissin Di622.

Mark,
I dont use any special timing rig (n o$ for it...)

I use a couple of techniques, many posted here I squeeze a drop out of a container and time as best I can the impact on the surface water.

In another setting i have a water bottle with a pin hole allowing a drip about 10 drops per sec that I catch with another container. I then let a few through and time the impact.

I alway s use a remote to triger my camera o reduce vibrations.

All shots are with flash behind a screen to diffuse it.

Its insane work...I get a few that I'm happy with though.

You develop a sense of timing these things after a while.

I cant do the two drops very well yet (the umbrellas)

Corrie White in Canada does amzing 3 drop stuff but she uses special equipment (called a time machine that automates the drops and triggers camera/flash etc...)

thanks for all the positive feedback
much appreciated.
Frank

Oh, wow! Just love the golden/blue backgrounds in this series. Very well done, Frank! I've wanted to try this for ages -- but, with milk and coloured dyes. Would be fascinating.

Agreed with Marc, the ones on your site are stunning.

Lovely captures Frank

I always enjoy images like. I always end up staring at them and wondering what the next image would have been like a fraction of a second later.

Cheers

Excellent execution on these Frank. It's been quite a while since I did a studio shoot. I've been an illustrator and creative director/designer for 30+ years prior to picking up the camera myself so I've spent countless hours in product and model shoots. I know the planning and set up it takes for shots like these so congrats on work very well done.
