Eta Carinae HaRGB

I got the opportunity to get some quality Ha data on NGC3372 last week and as I had a fair bit of colour data already on it from Wiruna I decided to do a Ha blend to finish it off. I think the result is better than the original color version that lacked a bit of punch.

I have a bigger file as a compressed JPEG here [2MB].

The colour channels were shot as RGB 6x10min and 24x1min with a QHY8 on the 90mmAPO. The Ha was 8x10min.

I used 50% of the Ha channel in the Red channel and 15% inside the Blue channel then boosted saturation and color balanced and leveled the final in phostoshop.

I'm pretty happy with it. That's the best I have to date in color for this object. Until next time.

Hope you like it.

You should be very happy with that Marc. Adding the Ha (and Hbeta) data certainly gives it that extra richness and punch. Although it's one of our most imaged objects, I never tire of seeing more renditions of it. Russ

Thanks very much mate. Yes it is a beautiful object. We're very lucky downunder.

Thanks Russ. Yes I'm pretty happy with the blend. In hindsight I could have worked out the overlap and registration of the Ha a little better but it still worked ok.

Excellent image Marc. all the factors that go to make a top image are there - really well done and nicely processed.

Awesome shot full screen thats for sure, excellent as is, tight and balanced colour. A bit of unfair zooming renders square stars though (not that it matters). What is the image scale?.

Thanks Fred. This is about 2.7asp. Because I had to crop a portion of the picture to the intersection of the RGB and Ha there's not much left to see. This is about 85% from 1:1 original so yeah some stars will only fit in one pixel on the CCD.

Hi Marc,

That is a beautiful image with fantastic star coulours. On Friday my Yr 11 Physics students did their first processing lesson ever on this object from data they took last Thursday and they were wrapped. I'll show them this image on Tuesday to encourage them and show them the colours they should be aiming for. When I look at the stars in the left hand side they appear to be a little oval but the right hand side looks fantastic. The star colours are great as well. Well done.

Mark

Hi Marc, this looks great and love the colour blend you've achieved.

Was this with the new refractor??

I ask as I do notice a little diagonal elongation to the corners.
Spacing again??

Just a little nit pick I guess but I know you were working on this a while back.

Rich

Thanks guys. Yes the color and Ha were taken with the new refractor but at different times. The color was taken back early in the year, I think during the only clear night we had in NSW in march Since then I have done a lot of bracing and centering on the extension tubes and focuser so that's why there was a slight sagging on the color back then that's not present on the Ha. But then again color is more prone to show deffects especially in the blues. The latest color shots I did didn't show *much* elongation but it's still there so time will tell. This scope is designed for a 19mm sensor. The QHY8 is 28mm diagonal. That's always been my bane with this camera. Although it's a great all rounder it's demanding on the optics on all my scopes because of its CCD surface. Big 7.8um pixels.

Thanks guys. Ha blends always outlines the deep reds in pics. I wonder if Oiii used in Blue and Green channels would have the same effect on an RGB shot. Will have to try that.

Very nice Marc, Sharp and clean without destroying colour and edge detail. Good noise control in the lower signal areas. Great stuff.

Thanks a lot for the feedback Doug. I'm not 100% happy with the field shape but I am quite happy with the colours that came out of the blend.
