I used to run SETI a decade ago, and was heavily into distributed computing looking at protein folding (which unlike SETI did have some actual positive results) for many years, but rising electricity costs stopped my activities. I worked out that my current overclocked quad core CPU alone (disregarding rest of the system power) could use about a dollars worth of electricity per day when under 24/7 100% load, and I wasn't willing to continue shelling out over 300 bucks worth of electricity per year to other peoples projects anymore.

Bart,

Someone has already made an IIS SETI team, I jumped over from ATOMICMPC to it a couple of months ago.

Maybe a better response should have been;
Yes, I think we should continue to search for LGM's, and through SETI this could be one of the means to do so.
In saying that, I dont want to go into whether there is intelligent life or not........I'm just putting in my computers 2 bits worth ( or should that be 8, 16 ,32,64 etc).
BOINC is a great platform ( in my opinion) to use unused computing power to dissect/compute any complex complexities....
I have also subscribed to LHC@HOME.
I know others have subscribed to more 'Human(e)' projects like Folding@home. I encourage that but I have my heart set on finding LGM's before a cure for Cancer et al.......
Cancer ( to just name one ) is a horrible disease and I do not want to say that finding LGM's is more important...... I choose to use my computing power for other things....

Kal ( Andrew), I agree, it does chew power. I used to have a puter running 24/7 plus my main puter whenever I turened it on. Tooooo much. I now even turn it of (boinc) when I have to do photoshop et al cause it just crashes the puter....even with 8 GB of ram ( maybe cause I have boinc running CUDA on the Gforce.)

Looks like I will have to jump ship too
Any probs with the transfer of credits? Let me know...

Cheers Marc, and sorry if I started your thread in a wrong way
