All I am trying to do is produce relatively high resolution deep wide fields from a light polluted site. Apart from the HDR method I have developed, the elimination of all light from entering the optical train that does not directly form the final image really helps.

It is not enough to take for granted that the imaging system you have is optimised.

By dedication to detail I am slowly eliminating all artefacts that each by themselves are inconsequential but added together lead to significant image degradation.

This is a work in progress. I will reach near perfection just before I croak!
By definition this is then as far as I will get!

I made a couple of maps with Star AtlasPro and with images superimposed with RegiStar.

Here is an animated GIF of a sequence of crops from the images used with EasyHDR to make the resultant tone mapped (HDR) image. The HDR image is the last in the sequence. 1.4 MB

Note in the HDR image how the bright stars are at the same size and brightness as in the 7s exposure stack yet the dim nebula detail has the brightness of the 240s exposure stack!


Details Each panel taken with Canon 5DH, Canon 300mm F2.8L at f/3.6.
Exposures 20 X ( 7s, 15s, 30s, 60s, 120s and 240s) at an ISO of 1600. Camera at -10C in Peltier fridge. Exposures dithered using Guidemaster. Usual HDR method

Well done.The external aperature stops that you use are a great idia too, keeping every unwanted photon away.
