Weird Weather Cloud Formation

I was at work yesterday (Mulgrave, Melb), and I seen this weird weather formation happen around 3PM.
Never seen it before, ever. It was only apparent for about 5 minutes.
It was about 26C, very sticky/humid. Heavy cloud formations everywhere.

What it was, is some sort of cloud formation, very dark grey in colour, that was basically shaped like a straw (one of those ones that you drink through), or even pencil like. Perfectly symetrical (and I mean perfectly symetrical) from top to bottom, all sides of it were clean, not ruffled edges.
I didn't get a photo of it, as I was greasy and oily all over.
But, it was huge, could have seen it 10k's away I reckon.
I rekon it spanned about 80o up, to the lowest level a cloud can form.
I initially suspected a "contrail", but discounted this as I see contrials everyday at work and know what happens even after a minute or so.
And no planes or aircraft, were in the area at this time

Without knowledge of what it was, it even had formation of circular movement at the top of it, there was this diffused rough, but easily recognised ring of cloud around this pencil shaped cloud.
You could nearly say it was a tornado, but it wasn't funnel shaped, it wasn't bent anywhere and it wasn't spinning fast enough.
One other weird thing happened as well, there was a white cloud forming exactly like the dark grey one, but it never fully formed. It got to about 1/3 formed and collapsed

Anyone else see this? Or know what cloud this could be?
It was weird but amazing. A co-worker, said it was "Aliens"

EDIT: Closest think I can think of, it was very similar in appearance to a Hole Punch Cloud, but with a large pencil shaped cloud dropping from the center.

Hi Brett,
If you check out the gallery at www.cloudappreciationsociety.org you might find something similar with an accompanying explanation.

Hi Brett

If it was over water it could have been a waterspout?

Sometimes you can get what is called a horseshoe vortex, which is like a small tornado up in the clouds, or on the side of a cumulus clud. The often bend over themselves into a horseshoe shape, hence the name. I've seen one myself here in Perth, and while uncommon I have seen a few photos of them. But I see you say that your cloud wasn't bent. I'm sure someone will have seen this before, hope you find a pic on the site jjj referenced.

Yep, here's one of a Horseshoe Vortex I had published in the Cloud Appreciation website.
