Jupiter 01-10-10 getting better a little

Hi,

Another pushing the boundaries a bit more also with a new version of APT out had some improvements that I could use. The 450D is starting to become a favorite although I will give the webcam a go to compare properly.

I found out as well that my barlow is not as bad as I thought originally so with a little more testing I may grab the 5 x Barlow to get a little more detail.

Was fighting clouds this time but looking at SkippySky noticed jetstream was down a bit so gave it a go. The wider view I kinda like a lot shows a lot of detail for such a small image, lacks a bit of colour though. Capture all 4 moons too

Others I capture are the closer views with slight colouring issues.

Coming along nicely Malcolm.
Just look's like you could do with a few more frames? To help with the noise. Webcams are so well suited, and easy to use.

Hi Malcolm,

You do get a good result using a DSLR and an equatorial platform.

You should have a go with the webcam, though it may be hard to keep Jupiter on the chip using an equatorial platform.

Take care,
Doug

APT live view recording approx 10FPS 2000 frames for each shot of that I got 200 processed by AVIStack, Registax was a mess. I think my processing needs improvement so I am gonna try and see if i can improve it.

I am sure I can get better images from the DSLR (clouds now gonna have to wait), I have been using a webcam for a while and never got the images I have posted here. I dont think I will have a problem keeping the image in the centre of the webcam once it has been found but I have always have a problem with focusing (next project after EQ platform is complete) which maybe an issue in these plus my location.

The DSLR is not using any filters either so that maybe the another step.

I am as always enjoying the challenge.

Sorry Malcolm, I should have asked before jumping in. 2000 frames should be enough to work with. Do you have an electric focuser?

At the moment it is a stock DOB it is a project I will be working on soon. My EQ uses servo control whereas I am contemplating Stepper for focuer for more accuracy.

This image i am looking at the quality of each frame by eye instead of using AVIStack to determin it. I hope that i could make some improvements. I will post a shot of the video captured in the next day or so.

Thanks Troy,

I have added 2 slighly improved image, jupiter and the 4 moons scaled 200% and dpi scaled 200% as well.

A small change in re-processing. I think it leads to othhr external issues that may stop me from getting really good images. 450D with APT does make for very very simple imaging compared to webcam.

I noticed something really interesting as i seperated the colours using AVIStack and found the Red image looks awful and was wondering what this could be. The other 2 colours still produce simlar final image though so it doesn't play a big impact.

3th Red, 4th Green, 5th Blue

Cheers

Focus is a challenge for me too as I use the SCT focus mechanism of moving the primary mirror. I found I could easily snap the focus in on nights of good seeing with my C8 but I've yet to experience good seeing with my C11. In my experience it is impossible to get good focus in bad seeing as the optimum focus is changing from moment to moment. In good seeing it is easy.

I don't use any filters with my webcam. I should really get an IR cut filter. You should be able to get a reasonable image without one.

Have you tried using Ninox to crop and centre the raw frames before processing in Registax?

Take care,
Doug

I am not experienced in using command line and may try one day although the last image I just posted above was centred using ppmcentre which is an earlier version of Ninox. Only tried it for the first time today. Ninox would be great if it had a windows interface.

If anyone can help i have posted on Youtube the first 500 images as processed through ppmcentre. This usually places them high quality first as the last 2000 images were quite blurry in comparison.

I suppose want to know is it focus, turbulence or whatever?

Cheers
