Along with my placed order of "Astrophysics is Easy" at The Book Depository, I also ordered this book http://http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/book/9780521818032/The-Cambridge-Encyclopedia-of-Stars "The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Stars". Looks a very educational reference book to compliment the "Astrophysics is easy" book. I have just noticed that If I'd waited until today to buy it instead of last night, I would have saved myself $6.00 (doh!) - it is now further reduced down to $58.56.

Here is the description of it from The Book Depository:
This unique encyclopedia provides a fascinating and fully comprehensive description of stars and their natures and is filled with beautiful color images. The book begins by telling the story of astronomy, from ancient constellations and star names to the modern coordinate system. Further chapters explain magnitudes, distances, star motions and the Galaxy at large. Double stars, clusters and variables are introduced and once the different kinds of stars are in place, later chapters examine stellar evolution, beginning with the interstellar medium and star formation, proceeding to our Sun and its characteristics and then the ageing process of solar-type and high mass stars. The book ends by showing how this information can be combined into a grand synthesis. Detailed cross-referencing enables the reader to explore topics in depth and makes this an invaluable work both for beginners and those with a more advanced interest in stars and stellar evolution.

Looks great value- hardback and 338 pages, and it is after all a Cambridge book so I can't do too wrong I don't think. Are you reading this Liz? Another book for you maybe?

Oh okay, I admit it, I bought another book too on that same order.
http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/book...4073160/Hubble titled "Hubble, Mirror on the Universe" (hardback, 192 pages). I saw this book at Borders Books on the weekend and I was very impressed with the gorgeous pics and information and had to have it.

Hamster .. cute rodents .. mischievous … always learning, always watching. Because Ed lives in the USA, they're called Hamsters .. not Guinea pigs … in the Hitch-Hiker's Guide … the mice ruled the world .. they're bigger here at IIS !.. Hamster-sized !!

Good sales people eh? Maybe we might knock Oprah's Book Club out of the running after all! And I think there's a good number of books sold that owe IIS some royalties too.
I'll agree with that !!

Carl, thank you, that was (as usual) a great read on how you explained Proxima Centauri. You explain things so well - I so enjoy reading your informative posts (Craig and you do a great job contributing knowledge to this forum) - I hope you will write a book one day.
I'd call it "How to make trouble .. without really trying" …

Cheers

In a class of my own !!

Ed's no Hamster .. he doesn't fit the mould.

Perhaps his IQ might rub off on his pets ?? (I live in hope !!).

It would be called: "The Holy Hand Grenade: Special Weapons and Tactics for use Against Pseudoscience" and it would be written under the pseudonym of "Cosmology's Rottweiler … Woof" !

It will be available through www.fishpond.com.au (because Carl has a major shareholdings there).

Suzy,
I've read most of a book called "The Observers Guide to Stellar Evolution", by Mike Inglis. I had it out from the local astro clubs library, but didn't finish it before having to take it back. Will get it out again soon to finish it.
It was very understandable and it is for the observer, so after each chapter, it has a list of objects to observe according to the stage of their evolution.
A book I would definately buy if I had the spare cash.
