remembering Jupiter...

Digging through my mars files - looking at the changing and growing face of Mars this opposition - and came across one of my better Jupiter shots taken with Mewlon and Neximage a few months back. It's never had an airing so what the hell I'll attach them here (the first more "natural" the second sharpened up to highlight detail).

Jupiter would have to be my favourite object - looking forward to it's return (once we get our fill of mars o' course

I'd like to see it at normal scale - I think it would be much sharper.

As I said on CN this morning, i'm not a huge fan of the oversampling that people tend to do these days just to get a large image scale. In most cases, it leads to the image looking less sharp and (to me) it appears to lose some of the detail.

A very nice image regardless.

I agree Mike, I dont resample at all. I have never had good results with it. For reasons like you say; all the images I have tried with it look over sampled.

Nice Jupiter Robert, and like you Jupiter is my favourite. Such a Massive target with so many things changing all the time. Can't wait myself for it return to our skies. So sick of Mars, low in the sky, seeing is crap at that angle. Bring back the King.

Peter, yes the Mewlon would be nice, and i am considering the 10" version on a G11 or EQ6 or a 9.25 celestron on the EQ6. Not sure which way to go yet. The Mewlons do produce good images. But they are really expensive.

Anyway Robert keep the images coming.

Hi Paul- I'd love to have the Mewlon 10in if money were no object. From what I've seen it's a quantum leap (in performance, but also damnably price!) over the 8inch I've got, mostly as it has fixed primary mirror and electric secondary shifting focus so no more mirror shift. The ultimate planetary imaging scope I'd venture... That said some of the images I've seen produced with the C9.25 are up there in the same league and at a fraction of the cost. I've been thinking myself of getting either a 9.25 or C11 on a HEQ5 or EQ6 for that little bit extra that only aperture can give when the seeing permits.

The exchange rate against the Yen hasn't been better than now for some time though - maybe it's an omen

Robert its about a 10K outlay for the 10" and EQ6 mount. I could do it and sell the 10" LX200 but would need to reconfigure my pier and loose a lot of the added features the Lx200 has. Lots to consider.

for me, considering's half the fun! whichever way you go, expect we'll see some special images...
