Hi liz

In windows 7 there is a snipping tool in the start programs menu if you run stellarium in window mode you can then start the snipping tool and capture the screenshot you want

The image should be somewhere after ctrl-s, you can do a search for stella*.png and see where they were saved. Or check in Stellarium in the configuration panel which folder is using to save the screenshots.

No M/S learnt a lot from the debacle that was vista they released it before it was ready there was no support for hardware drivers and the system was very unstable. Its not the first time they have had problems like this the same thing happened with WIN ME and it still sends shivers down my spine when I see it installed on a PC I have to fix. What do I like about Win 7 the list would be shorter if I listed what I don't like they still don't get it that they should have a Root partition a Home partition with the OS installed in the Root partition and all user data and Programs installed in the home partition that way if something goes wrong with the OS all you do is reinstall the OS and all your data and programs are still installed meaning less headaches when Windows needs rebuilding and your programs are not lost. I really like the problem steps reporting tool it takes snapshots of each step and writes what happened and saves it in a pdf to either send to the tech to see what happened or it can be used to show someone how to do certain tasks. I really like the win shake to close other windows and the way you can drag a window to the top of the screen to make it full screen and the way you can drag the window to the side and it takes up half of the screen and then you can drag another to the other side to do the same great for comparing images to each other. I have had Win 7 and Xp and Vista running on the same computer at different times and Win 7 was heaps faster than both of the others with the same spec's for each. I have an old program I reallly like using it is Sim Earth it is a game but I find it scientific you start with a planet early in its life and seed the planet with life and see what happens. Well this program is old DOS base and wouldn't run on Vista but it will run on Win 7 without even using XP mode I just installed it and away it went. There has been no updated version of Sim Earth which I am constantly wishing someone with the knowhow would make a new one. I think this has been the longest post I have ever written and would have been much longer if I had added all the good things about Win 7.

I have Windows 7 64 bit installed on a separate computer for testing purposes. I don't particularly like it at the moment because I need to learn how to access the things I always used in earlier versions. This slows down my use when I need to think about the options I used to get from the old files, edit and view menus.

The big drawback for me is the number of DOS based utilities that I have compiled from QBASIC and BASIC that will no longer run on a 64 bit system.

I can get around this by running VMware OS but that is still a bit messy. However I don't have any problems with running and compiling Stellarium.

Hi Barry

Have you downloaded and installed the XP mode addon that allows these programs to run from the start menu of Win 7. XP mode is a virtual xp which you can start like a vm of xp or just install software in xp mode which is available just like it is running natively on win 7. If you already knew all this and it just didn't work just ignore me I wont mind

+1 for Win7.

There are a few nvidia issues and I haven't been able to get any brand of serial to USB cable working without going into the devlopment environment, but overall, I think Microsoft have hit the mark with this one.

XP was okay, but the networking, particularly for a frustration-clicker like me, needed a lot of work. Also, the memory had a tendency to "fill up" and require a restart.

I was an apple user for a while, but the day ctrl-option-esc (or whatever it was) failed to kill a program was the last straw for me. My first Mac lasted 4 years and looked and worked the same as the day I got it, my 4th fell to pieces within about 20 months. I am continuously amazed at how they manage to keep an "alternate underdog" status when they are so restrictive in their OS and now top the sales.

Now Asus is my apple - my eeepc 701 survived being outside during the Gap storms, needing only to be blown out with a hairdryer and my full size laptop lives a hard life (was even stolen by the dog one night, found it in her bed the next day) but keeps on ticking

Now that I sound as bitter about apple as a de-programmed cult member, I will stop typing

Hi Warren
I haven't bothered with the XP add on because I have Multi boot and also a virtual XP and Win98-2e in VMware. In fact Windows 98 2e does not run natively on the computer at all but runs OK in virtual mode. The programs run OK in virtual mode if necessary. My Windows 7 64 bit is only for testing what will run natively.

Depending on Which version windows 7 I believe on mine some program store images etc into a virtual store directory in the user directory. I found this when installing ATP although i have not tested this feature of Stellarium.
