Blankety Blanks

I have been trying to fill in the missing bit of this mosaic and add to the bottom of it. Melbourne weather has thrown up thin high cloud and mist on what promised to be clear Moonless nights by the IR cloud satellite images.

Here is an image with a blank bit 7MB 11.2 X 7.6 degrees.

You will have to use your imagination to fill in the blank bit and imagine the expletives used when weather ruins another night of imaging.

At least I have figured out how to completely eliminate reflections from bright stars.

That will be a very nice image when finished. I was iced up here this morning.

Great shot Bert! I don't mind the missing bit. The visible part makes up for it times over.
So what's the trick to deal with reflections from bright stars? I'm all ears.

Marc with panel1 where Antares is at about center I still had two reflections due to Antares. I just collected data at two offset positions so the reflections are in a different place and stacked the lot in DSS using Kappa-Sigma where the pixels outside the sigma level you set are ignored rather than replaced with a median.

I have tried to use the cloning tool but this ends up looking even worse than the original faint reflection when using K-S.

Below is is a crop from a single position final image. The reflection is just below the glob.

You can see from the partial mosaic where two positions were used this reflection is totally gone.

Does this help?

Thanks Bert. It does make a lot of sense. Offset + data rejection. Drawing on this line of thought would creating a difference layer in photoshop then using it as a mask work? I'm thinking I have loads of TIFF/PSD files already with halos that I haven't necessarily kept all the original raw files for.

I have every raw file I have ever collected. There is no reason to erase!

Used to but it's storage issues for me. I keep the PSDs and the collapsed stacks now.

nice work.. impressive from anywhere in melbourne! (but certainly not from here in hawthorn!)

the bit you're missing is a very interesting bit though.. a faint and not often imaged extension. i have it in my 200mm mosaic from SPSP but no time to process yet. i'm sure you are keen to fill it in.

i also accidentally managed to eliminate reflection by changing filters - with different filters in the camera, the reflections were in different places and so easy enough to mask out. the offset idea is a good one.

Exellent work. One must wonder when sooner or later with wide field imaging like that, a comet might be discovered.

Bits or no bits, I like it Bert. The FoV is massive with plenty of dusty features on display. You're a mosaic machine. Good stuff!

Bert,
I always love your work - but you have really taken it to the next level with this one. Can't wait until it's finished - I suspect it's going to go down as one of the best images of the year.
