I think the lightning is due to static buildup caused by the ash particles violently colliding and rubbing against each other. The lightning pics are amazing!

HA HA One little volcano in a small country stuffs up the whole of Europe. I love it. Mother Nature at her best. Goes to show how insignificent us humans are, and incapable of doing anything about it

Yes the smoke and ash cause friction I think and generate the lightning if I am wrong I am sure someone will tell me
