Some Sunnage? or is it Solage?

I got a tip from a mate that there was a big prom on Friday, so captured this after work. Technobill was already onto it.

I tried DaveG's advice and stacked without optimisation but I still get the lines. I have tried to remove them in PS, but if I get rid of the lines I get rid of the detail too. I might try a merge on the original stacks, then sharpen in PS. I found that Avistack produced the same lines as Registax 5.

Captured with the DMK 41 through the ED80 with SM40 and B1200.

Here's a reprocess of the full disc.

This one was the stacked but unsharpened images merged in PS, a heavy unsharp mask in a 62% opacity layer over the original, and then the usual layers for colouration and contrast. The vertical lines showed up again in the unsharp masked layer, so they are a DMK artifact.

Sheeny,
I really like the way you have presented the proms, they look fantastic. Well Done.
I am no expert on this topic but Sol is a Sun. The Sun is the closest one to us and although other stars are also suns, their distance makes them stars, so I doubt there will be much confusion if you use the term sun. If someone says the Sun I rarely (read never) think hmm does he mean Sol or Sirius :-)

In regards to the lines. Which version of the DMK 41 are you using USB or Firewire? If USB make sure that you have the camera in a port all on its own, dont use a hub, try to use one cable lenght with no extensions and also ensure that no other USB devices are plugged into another USB port from the same pair.
If the lines are consistently in the same columns it could be a problem with the ccd (some cameras often have a dead line or two) have you tried doing flats? Do you see the lines then (maybe vary the gamma from low to high to see if they are visible and always in the same spot).
Sorry if this has been covered in another thread.

Still fantastic images well done.

So cool! That's a huge flare there.
Solar imaging is something I'd love to try with my QHY5. I'm too scared to cook anything though.

Nice work Al. I captured some first light with my PST yesterday but my main laptop has now decided to die. I hope I can recover the data off it

Thanks Bill. I stole the positive negative idea from Matt! Thanks Matt! I just added the usual colour afterwards.

Unfortunately, In my efforts to get the main prom more away from the edge of the frame I didn't catch enough of the other side to make a complete whole disc mosaic of the proms. If I had I'd would've tried a HDR overlay on the surface disc.

USB. Yeah I have a few things to check and sort out there. I have used the DMK41 through a hub and 5m extension cable without lines in the past. I had a few gremlins the other day, and bypassed the hub the DMK usually goes though and changed the camera cable to the one off my DMK 21 (I think this was the real problem). The lines have only appeared on images collected through the ED80 with the SM40 and B1200, so I need to shoot some moon to see if the same occurs there (because they weren't there in the past) just to eliminate a settings issue.

Unfortunately I'm stuck with using a 5m extension cable unless I can get hold of a 5m USB cable with the right plugs on it.

Use the right filters / scope and there's not much risk of that Marc! Go on! You know you want to!

Oh no! I know that feeling all to well! (Who doesn't?) I hope you get your data back, and you can settle your system down to some trouble free imaging.

I must say, I am impressed with the SM40/ED80/B1200 combination! It gives a lovely evenly illuminated image. No PST sweet/hot spot...

Nice shot indeed Al, i like the detail in the prom, they can be fickle things to capture.

Cheers,

Trent & Julie

Hi Al,
Lines!!!!!! I was to busy admiring the detail in the proms in your second image to worry about the lines in the first. If you hadn't mentioned it then I wouldn't have noticed them.

Excellent images
Regards
Trevor

Al thanks for reprocessing. Seems to confirm that its probably some sort of seeing artefact, I know guys with Skynyx cameras and they get them too.

I'm wondering, Dave, if its a temperature thing? I haven't come across it before while lunar imaging. During solar work the camera is sitting up with one side in the full on sun, plus the higher daytime temps... If it is, it won't take much to rig a little shade for the camera, but cooling might be a bit more drastic.

Dont know Al ... its possible. We had the coldest winter on record this year and I still got them?? Wonder would it be the tighter bandwidth, I remember imaging Venus in UV and getting the same sorta thing too. and venus was low with bad seeing. Have any other solar imagers/ UV venus imagers seen these, but be sure theres nothing dodgy with your set up
