In my opinion I think this a bad strategic move by the USA not going to the Moon, I hope that Congress sees the short sightedness of the policy and sends back to the President for re consideration.

Comon' we all know the American's never landed on the moon.

What I would love for them to do is to record undeniable proof of the leftovers from the US missions. Maybe that will once and for all end the moon landing conspiracies.

Yanks not returning to the moon. A financial and political decision. They have no money. They're trillions of $ in debt. And the president knows that the majority of the voters would scream about wasted money if they went back to the moon. Or would they?
He doesn't want to jeopardise his chances of re-election, so science just has to suck it up.

The yanks certainly are in debt.. and guess predominantly who to? China! Well, only 700 billion or so, so it ain't that bad i guess.

In my eyes the moon just gets in the way (literally and figuratively).

I would be impressed if China did actually go there though i must admit.

This is not a good thing. China does not know how to play nice, and will simply claim it as their own and charge everyone for a piece of it.
Besides, we need to start doing this stuff as a world conglomerate, share the cost around and have everyone benefit, not just one nation.

hrmm not sure about this statement. How does China not know how to play nice? or any less fairly than other nations? Any examples?

lol that's true. I'm sure he'd have much to say, however I'm unsure whether he'd use that conflict as an argument against China going to the moon (maybe he would).

It would be not too dissimilar arguing that the US shouldn't have gone to the moon because of Vietnam... It was great that the US went there (the moon) regardless of their foreign (or domestic) policy. The same should go for China shouldn't it

ok I'll be quiet now

You are quite right in saying that The Dalia Lama would not use the conflict as an argument against China going to the moon he feels great compassion about the people that are being mistreated by the Chinese government as well as to the Government officials themselves as their actions are causing them great harm for this and future lives. Anyway that is what I have heard him say in Sydney last December when I went to hear him talk. And I know that he is very interested in Science and really likes astronomy and has his own telescope just like us. He really believes in Science and trusts it.

The great thing about science is that, most of the time at least, it crosses political boundaries. Scientists from the west applaud the discoveries of scientist from the east and vice versa. Information is freely shared, once that first paper has been published so as to gain credit for a new discovery, in the knowledge that the sharing of new information will further advance the science.
Quite often this has been happening between scientists while the respective governments were all but warring.
Of course there is certain science that does not get shared, like the science of how to annihilate the opposition.
But generally speaking, science is a bit more altruistic than that.

So what I meant to say in conclusion before I got excited and pressed submit was that genuine, altruistic scientists will be eagerly looking forward to the Chinese going to the Moon and seeing what new discoveries they can make.

The Chinese didn't host the Olympic Games because it was a nice thing to do, nor will they go to the moon for reasons of science. Yes, they will conduct science, but let's get real here. China going to the moon is all about 'face', nothing more. It is a symbol to the rest of the world that China is top dog now.

You've got to look at this with a level of humility; China made all the right moves while the 'West' lived it up. We should be grateful that we in Aust are getting a free ride on their coat-tails and thank God we have a high level of multiculturalisim here, one which includes so many Chinese.

Forget the US, they are too busy preventing themselves from becoming Mexico's poorer neighbour after a sovereignty exchange for LCD TVs and Hummers with private European owned Banking systems (Top move that ).

This is a new and very different world we live in now. Expect China to deliberately surpass anything the US did in its showing of 'Face' and that China can do better. If the Olympics blew your mind, wait till you see what they do in space. If China does something, expect it to be quite a statement.

Think I have to agree with you there re the reasons for China going to the Moon. But I'm still looking forward to see what they discover. Hmm....if they discover nothing new, do they lose face???
