After the recent heavy rain we've had across the state, Barry Armstead and I thought it might be worthwhile going for a bit of a hike through the Gibraltar Creek Pine Forest in Woods Reserve to photograph Gibraltar Falls around the Golden Hour.
It took me a little while to get down the beaten path; the path is a little tricky for someone who doesn't go hiking often. Barry had no problem, but, I was a bit sluggish behind him. We finally made it to the bottom of the falls (drenched in sweat, as it was rather humid!), where I stacked it and fell smack on my side whilst trying to navigate the slippery rocks to scout the best spot to image from.
I managed to make this photo whilst Barry was imaging a skink or lizard on one of the tiny ledges which look out at the waterfall.

Wow mate, you really made those colours pop! In the camera, the water had a real rusty red colour to it, but on my monitor at home it came out brown.
Can you see the small child's head poking above the rock almost centre of the photo? My wife spotted it in mine and said it is spooky! It is a perfect head and eyes popping up and looking out of the water.
There are even more people in that photo. Look to the left - you can clearly see what looks like a Palestinan (?) woman with head dress in the shaddow with a companion's head a little to the left and below her?????
Then what about that man sitting at the bottom of the falls, leaning over. Fishing?? Doing up his shoe laces??
That's one big eerie picture
I couldn't see the small child's head until you pointed it out to me on the iPhone. Now, I can't stop looking at this image to see if there are other goodies sprinkled throughout!

The 30 second exposure was due to us shooting in very, very low light. It was getting difficult to focus on things it was that dark. My circular polarizer adds about 2-stops of exposure from memory, so, that also helps.

The camera is a remarkable instrument and I'm learning what it can do all the time. To say I'm happy with it is an understatement -- it's a dream come true. People can go on and on about what camera is better than what, but, I typically find they're the people who are pixel peepers and aren't capable of making a beautiful photo if their life depended on it.

Yes, absolutely I really must join you guys for a trip out. However I will be out of action with terrestrial photography for a while, I'm carefully packing up my 50D right now and its heading back to the shop tomorrow (This goes back to the vertical band issue with astro imaging). I'm being told it could be around 4 - 6 weeks until Canon complete their investigation and determine what to do.
They'll sort it out, one way or another. I have had good experience with Canon support and maintenance. One of my lenses had a known flaring problem. I took the lens in to their Ryde office and they had it fixed and cleaned and couriered to me within two weeks. Because it was a known issue, it didn't cost me a cent.
If worst comes to worst, they may just replace the camera.
