Problem with Als Clock

Hi All,

I recall recently someone posting about a problem with Als Clock changing correctly for daylight saving and that Al had rectified the problem.

I deleted my version of Als Clock and downloaded the current version from IIS but it wont install. I keep getting an error message about there being a missing file and to contact the author.

Is anyone aware of a problem?

Regards
Trevor

Within a couple of hours of me reporting it.

How did you delete it? On XP I did an uninstall from "Add/Remove Programs" and the setup in the new version installed first try.

G'day Trevor,

I'm not sure if Mike has updated the download on the IIS site yet. I've attached the latest (fixed) version here as well as the original thread
http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...ht=star+charts
in the meantime.

Al.

File Type: zip AlsAstroClock21.zip (229.5 KB, 28 views)

Hi Andrew, I deleted it using Add/Remove Programs, my operating system is Vista Ultimate

Thanks Al, I have downloaded the new version but it still wont install.

The program unzips fine in Zip Genius6 and then when I click on Setp.exe it tries to install and I get an error message "Cannot start application, Cannot download application, The application is missing required files, Contact application vendor for assistance.

I have not had any problems previously with Vista Ultimate, all of my astro software works fine although this does smack of a Vista problem, but then I was able to originally install Als Clock. I Also have your most excellent Als Reticle which I use all of the time.

Hmmm... how disappointing.

I don't know what to suggest, I haven't come across this problem before and I'm not familiar with Vista at all.

The zip file I posted works, cause I downloaded from the other thread and checked it at work before posting it here.

Have you checked your security settings in Vista? It's normal to get a warning message when installing under XP that the publisher is unknown, so could be a security risk. That's about the only thing I can think of... maybe it's looking for a recognised certificate???

Trevor, you might want to try right clicking on the exe and select "run as administrator" I've found quite a few apps that won't install until that option is used, despite my user having admin priviledges.

Thanks Al, it is obviously a quirk with my operating system. I have been able to install it, sort of. Double clicking on setup.exe just results in the error messages that I have previously mentioned. However, bearing in mind that I am unzipping within ZipGenius6, if I open the "Actions" drop down menu and click on "Install", with setup.exe highlighted, it does install and your most excellent clock appears. The UTC is spot on for CSST.

However when I try to close the application I get an "Unhandled exception has occurred in your application" error message but if I repeatedly hit "Quit" eventually it does close. Then the next time I try to open it from my Programs list I get a Microsoft,NET Framework message "Unhandled exception has occurred in your application" message but by being persistent and hitting "Continue" a couple of times the application open and all is good.

Have used uninstall/install several times with the same result. I am now just happy that it will open and close for me, it doesn't matter that it takes a couple of attempts. I really like this application of yours and it does run on Vista Ultimate with ZipGenius6 and is correct for UTC with daylight saving.

Thanks for the advice but I had already tried to do that with no luck. By right clicking on setup.exe in ZipGenius6 the resultant menu does not have install as administrator as an option.
I have now got it working but obviously there is still a problem with it and my operating system but I am happy to be able to use it anyway.

Hmmm, interesting you mention that... I had the same error message appear when I installed the new version in XP the first time after uninstalling the old version. I didn't have to repeatedly hit "quit" though.

I found I couldn't install this version while the old version was installed, so had to do the uninstall. I don't remember having to do that with previous version changes. So I put the exception error down to a bug or a bit of untidiness as a result of the attempted installation and uninstallation.

I'm not very trusting of installing from inside any of the unzip programs. I'm much happier to unzip to a folder, and run setup from there.

I think your right there Andrew, I have been messing around for 2 days trying to sort this out. This afternoon I happened to run CCleaner and since I have done that AlsClock opens fine and closes with not a problem. I really have no idea why this should be, given the problems that I have had.

It is working fine now, thats the main thing. Thanks for your input.
