Morning's First Kiss

Pure first light bathes the spray of the swell crashing on Curl Curl's shoreline. I made this photo immediately after sunrise.

Triple-processed single RAW file for spray highlights, foam and colour balance.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
1/4s f/22.0 at 105.0mm iso100

Slightly higher resolution available here.

Comments, critique, etc., most welcome.

Regards,
Humayun

Cheers, John.

g'day humayun,

yeah it can be pretty hard getting critique. I moderate a photography forum with nearly 5000 members and we constantly have to push for people to answer threads... its information overload

now for "morning's first kiss"... hmm, its a striking image for sure and the lighting works well (i take it this was early in the morning). the highlight give an almost magical appearance. with lots of movement and distraction my eye unbelievably are still drawn to the "center stage" (the water splashing on the foreground rock). i reckon this would work pretty well hanging on a wall.

Awesome shot!! It makes me want to see the full frame!
Not sure if it is intended but that upload is smallish. The one linked to is a much better size...

I love it H. It must be difficult to get shutter speed FOV and Ap just right with a moving target.
I enjoy your images. Thanks

David,

Maybe I need to start doing macros?

What, hard to get critique even on a photography forum? phw0ar!

Yes, you are correct, the light illuminating the spray is from the first minute of the sun having risen. The purest of pure light.

Thanks!

Mitchell,

Unfortunately, the other images from this morning didn't turn out as I would have liked. It was actually high tide and rather unsafe to get down amongst the rocks to frame a good composition. I will go there again the next time I am up in Sydney and try for something better. Hopefully at low-medium tide.

Beren,

Thanks, mate. Glad you liked it.

David,

Cheers! It takes a few shots to get it right. I generally stick to between f/11 and f/16 for maximum depth of field and play with the shutter speed and ISO for the rest.

Kev,

You're far too kind!

I want to get out of IT and spend the rest of my days travelling and photographing.

Hopefully if the weddings keep coming in, I may be able to do it sooner rather than later.

Looks great! May I ask if this was handheld or not? What a killer combo 5DMk2 + 24-105L !!!

Hi Troy,

Cheers.

Definitely not handheld, and IS was disabled. I do all my landscapes on a tripod. This one was shot with the IR remote. I waited for the right wave(s) and clicked away. It certainly makes life easy.

And, yes, the 24-105 f/4L IS USM is a remarkable quality lens. It's my most-used lens (RB will tell you the same) and performs wonderfully at weddings, too.

I've been following photographers on another forum who have been using it for studio shoots and weddings and it is just so sharp.

Regards,
Humayun
