Veil Nebula (I think) from Astrofest 09

Hi,

I am avoiding marking the assignments from hell so I thought I would have a crack at processing this image.

Taken through my W/O Flt 110 with unmod Canon 400d guided with Phd guideng. Image is 7 x 12 min Lights, 3 x 12 Min darks with flats and bias frames. I had aimed for 12 shots but came back at the end and after the 7th shot my guiding went haywire. ISO 800. Stacked using DSS and processing in Photoshop cs3. I'venever shot this image let alone processed it so all comments welcome.

Mark,

A celestial ribbon dangling in space.

Would liked to have seen more exposures, but, them's the breaks. Perhaps you can add to it next season.

Well done!

Regards,
Humayun

Doug and Humayun,

Thanks for the encouraging words. The spike are from the Noel Carboni actions I have purchased with a few other processes applied.

That looks very nice. Details in the neb came out beautifully. Top shot and nice processing too.

Gotta love procrastination Fantastic image. From the little I know this can be a difficult subject to image.

Great image for suh short exposure duration. You have captured the fine filaments of the veil very nicely.
Well done.

Yep this is the Veil, NGC 6992/95, as Glen said, also referred to as The Veil Neb East segment.

And yes the Veil is difficult to image as Adam said, because it need loads of exposure since it is faint and low.

You've done very well here Mark with a total exposure of 1.4 hours.

Looks great to me Mark. I have imaged a smaller area of this object and have hours worth of data that truly doesn't add a thing compared to yours. You are correct, you dont see this one much, its low down nearer the horizon position makes it not accessible unless one has a really clear northern aspect. In a lot of suburban setups that are at best a compromise the northerly aspect is not a great consideration and especially that low. I wish I had the same area of sky to the south available as I have to the north.

Once again ... great image

Thank you all. I'm really happy with it. As I recall my scope was on the west side of my mount and was approaching horizontal when I started. I did not want to do a flip so just kept going with my fingers crossed. When I came back after 12 x 12 minute shots my scope was approx 30 degrees below the horizontal and my tracking was not happy hence only 7 good shots. The northern aspect at Astrofest was clear and very low as was the rest of the compass points. Have fun and good shooting.
