I agree. And I think science and religion are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

In regard to the article, it is newsworthy, people are entitled to an opinion and some may perhaps be amused. But we must be careful not to overstep the mark into cultural and religious ridicule. It is the epitome of arrogance to assume our own views on either science or religion are infallible.

Hehe that's what I did too. I had visions of rabbits being fired into the sky by cannons.

I love the irony. The Rabbi's can't accept scientific fact that the spread of the virus is biological, yet happily jump into a plane which defies the law of gravity thanks to technology developed through science.

Or perhaps I'm missing the group at the back whose prayers are allowing the plane to fly?

It's not the rabbis praying keeping the plane flying...it's the angels tied to the wings that make the plane fly

Yes, but the problem is one major religion (I won't name it) has a habit of forcing ITS beliefs down everyones throats. Some examples:

1) even a man of muslim faith is not able to have more than 1 wife in Australia. It's HIS religion. Why can't he? Doesn't the "law" interfere and not respect his religious beliefs?

2) Gay marriage? Love is love, irrespective of the sex of the lovees. Yet, it's not legal for 2 gays to get married. Marriage is a symbol of love. Yes, love. And respect for each other.

I'm pagan and you wouldn't believe the white lies about this religious belief that a certain other religion spreads. I find it even more amusing since said other religion bases nearly all of its religious holidays on pagan ones. And stole a good deal of ideas from us as well.

I find it a bit of the pot calling the kettle black to be honest. Said religion demands immunity from illegal activities (say, no women bishops, that's *discrimination*). They are above the law it seems.

The problem is that religions are a competition, and thus, they tend to not live will with each other. Enough said.

Have you read "Stranger in a Strange Land" by Robert A Heinlein, David?
You'd get a good giggle out of it.

That wasn't all they stole.... one jesus type figure + 12 loyal followers,
40 days and 40 nights rain/flood, parting of the seas, the breaking of a
few loaves of bead and a few fish to feed thousands. Can all be found
in storries dating back some 4000years or was it 3500years prior to the
jesus rehash.

Well as expected this thread went off course and now it seems to be an opportunity for people to say whatever they like about any religion.

IceInSpace has rules in place about discussion of certain topics because this inevitably happens.

"Because people might get upset" is a perfectly legitimate reason to have rules in place, in a community where the topics and subjects are about "astronomy", not religion, politics, etc.

Just because it's the internet, doesn't mean you get to say what you want and be damned with what other people think. In the 'real world', and in any other 'real life' community (eg: a room full of people from diverse backgrounds), I wonder whether people would be so open about their criticisms without worrying what people would think and say back to you.
