Thanks David...agreed, there's some nice toe-dipping into Ha showing up on the forum now. Marc's Swan was a very recent goody.
I've tended to approach Ha as a supplement to my RGBs, but I think I'd like to explore pure ha imaging further - love those very tight stars and all that detail!!!
I'm very happy with the 300mm f4L. Also performs very well with the 1.4x extender at 420mm which is a major plus too.
Have used it less in the daytime than I have for astro work, but loved the sharpness and IS function at a recent soccer match.

Good one Doug. I wonder whether a 16 bit CCD instead of the 14 bit 40D would still give you a burnt out core? Increased dynamic range might give you more latitude. I'm not sure. Just wouldn't like to start doing multiple exposures in Ha.

You should see my 10min Ha Lagoon for the ultimate in burned out cores Craig!! I'm resigned to taking a variety of exposure lengths for specific objects in both Ha and RGB images (although I didn't in this case!) - just the way it is with DSLRs I suppose.
How goes it with you?

ps...got to add that I'm quite impressed with the Ha sensitivity of the modded 40D.
I love the monochrome it gives it the eerie menacing look

Try lassoing it, feathering it 25 pixels and shadows/highlights or curves to get the detail back. It'll be there.

Thanks for the advice Greg, gave it a try. Just cant get the central core to yield any detail - too burned out.

...lots of detail but a bit burnt out around Eta. Well that's what you get with a LBV in the neighbourhood!!
