shocked by my Canon AC power adapter

Tried using my genuine Canon AC adapter for my 30D the other night for only the second time since I bought it. While focusing my scope, my forearm touched the camera's flash hotshoe and I got a little shock, more like a tingle, from it. Assume something is shorting or overloading something?

I also usually have the clamp plate for my tripod permanently screwed into the base of my camera, and when I touched that it also gave me the same shock.

Other than that the camera seemed to operate fine, but didn't want to take any chances to took it out and put the battery back in.

Anyone had this happen before? Adapter faulty and return it?

When I used to use mine on the telescope, I used to get a tingle on my nose when it touched the back of the camera while I was looking through the viewfinder....

Didn't like it either...

And when there's dew on the camera strap, the voltage travels up that and gives a tingle too.
Just the thing to keep you awake during a long night of imaging.

So you're both suggesting it's normal? Doesn't seem right to me. Worried about damage - not to me, but the camera.

it does it with mine as well - much better on the 12 volt version that i have that was made up. the power pack does give a tingle - especially with a little bit of dew, though I do try to keep the mail part covered and dry.

Yep I agree....better than coffee.

It happens to me all the time and as Baz said, tinggles the nose.

There won't be any damage to the camera (unless the dew gets so heavy that it's dripping all over the body).
I usually place a cloth over the 20Da when conditions are damp.

Ditto with both my 300D and 20D using AC adapter, especially if the adapter is strapped to the mount. Usually don't have a problem if there is some sort of insulation between the adapter and mount or I'm using a different AC source. (different lead and different gpo)

Most power packs are just Double insulated, and NOT grounded.
So you will always get a little zip when touching.

I feel a little cheated now, as I never get any tingling, zaps or shocks from my 40D when used with the canon mains adapter!

And, I’ve got a large nose!

Happened to me as I was focusing the camera. My nose touched the connector and I got a good blast from it - not just a tingle. I now tape it off so I dont get a repeat. Certainly was an eyeopener.

That’s nothing new…new material perhaps, but Tycho Brahe, the famous Danish astronomer, lost part of his nose in a duel with a fellow Danish nobleman in 1566 and for the rest of his life, he was said to have worn a replacement made of silver and gold, using a paste to keep it attached.

Although I wouldn't recommend using silver and gold in this case.....they're very good conductors.
