Binoculars-> finder scope?

Hi all,

Anyone converted a pair of binocular to a monocular finder?

I'm finding straight through finders the better type of finder for me. I've had a go with right angle erect image finders, and am far from being sold on them.

Also, traditional straight through finders require tiresome mental gymnastics because of their inverted images, .

I'm aware that I will need to make my own cross-hair's, so were to find fine enough wire?

Anyone had a go?

Mental

Hi Dannat,

I should have mentioned also that I'm looking to use it as a finder for the 17.5" dob I'm reworking so I will need to keep weight down.

I did that with one 8x50 :-)
Since it was broken (prisms in both parts) I used adequate PVC tube for only one half (so it is much lighter than it used to be) and mounted objective and eyepiece (in eyepiece I mounted reticle made of two glass fibers).
The other half I am using as a monocular.
I will post an image later if you like to see it.

G'day Bojan,

Mate, I'd love to see a pic of your finder, . I've got plenty of 50mm (i.d.) PVC pipe. Good idea to make it lighter. Where did you get your glass fiber from?

Here they are..
The fiber I found at work (NEC, where I used to work until couple of months ago). It was from old fiber cable, diameter was 0.3mm or so.
I believe you can use fiber from those decorative lights as well. Those fibers are thick enough to be easily seen in a FOV.
Just be careful they are easily broken and you can glue them on one side only.

Hi Bojan,

Nicely done. The first pic looks like the whole arangement is very sinister.

What did you make the rings from?

The rings were found on waste yard a long time ago (I tend to collect things that might be useful one day :-) ) . They are black anodised aluminium, and I do not know what they were meant to be used for, but they are perfect for this purpose. I just have to drill the 4 threads for adjusting screws and one for stand on each ring.
The first image is current arrangement.
Actually, I do not use the scope much, mostly this red dot finder is enough to find almost anything.

I made a quick 90degree finder for my 10"strut scope. Works well. Cross hairs fine wire glued into place.

G'day scopemankit,

I dig your finder, . I particularlly like the clamp you used to fix and align with. What are they called and where did you get it from? Could be a solution for me, though I think the finder would need to be quite light?

Hi Mental,

Here is a sketch of the two ball universal coupler. I suppose you could make a 1 ball but then you have to make a hinge on the one side.
The tube in the original pic is fiberglass, as is the scope's single truss. It is very strong and very light. It is cast around alunminium tubing (which is used as the joiner, allowing focusing.

The balls and plates are brass. The balls turned on a lathe.

Try and make it. It's cheaper and YOU will have made it!
