What was the occasion???

I noticed that at 1 time ISS had over 1300 users online at once, was there a special occasion or the stats playing up ?? :-)

Check the date - it was a total lunar eclipse during evening primetime.

Yep, Jacquie is dead right, it was a big day for the IIS server, but i survived.

In fact that's not correct. Bots are quite easily identifiable.

It was evening primetime right in the middle of the lunar eclipse, after IceInSpace was mentioned as a source for lunar eclipse information on national radio, and also receiving links from dozens of sites to the eclipse article (the article was read over 100,000 times within a few days).

We 43000+ unique visitors on that day, when the usual average back then would've been about 2500.

1300+ people on the server at one time, within a 15 minute time period (the cookie timeout) definitely set the record!

It was a very, very big day. The server crashed once but Terry kept it ticking along.

Search bots.. like google bots, yahoo bots, etc.

Automated computer software that trawls through sites looking for new content to index in their search engine.
