For the *vast* majority of shots, you don't need to fork out on a 1.4 or 1.2L variant. The 1.8 Mark II is very sharp. True, it's lightweight and build quality isn't grand and it doesn't have USM (uses ring USM from memory), but do you really need those features? f1.2 is very very very shallow DOF, you'll rarely use it imho. I have both the 1.8 and 1.4, and whilst the 1.4 produces nice bokeh, even its DOF is too shallow imho.
I guess for astro shots it might make a bit of difference in hindsight...but I still can't justify a ten fold price increase over the 1.8 unit...
