Love the dune shot!

Is the "shadow ring" taken looking down on the clouds at the shadow of your plane or is it looking up through cloud at a plane? I assumed it was the former, but I didn't expect the rainbow effect.

Ditto regarding the dune shot.
Looks great, love the contrast, almost looks like a work of art.

Regards
Trevor

Hi Kenny,

Thanks for the shots.

The Channel Country is some of the most magnificent landscape in Australia
to fly over and its vastness is always a reminder of the futility of European
explorers such as Burke and Wills, who set off plodding through it on horse and
by foot.

It's one of those places where you know if the plane should come down
without a locater beacon, then they may not find you any time soon!

The rainbow around the shadow of the aircraft is called "The Glory"
and I first remember reading an article describing the physics
behind it in Scientific American in 1974.

Ever since then I have looked out for it and observed it quite a lot.

(A reference is "The Glory", H. C. Bryant and N. Jarmie, Scientific American,
July 1974. I possibly still have a copy here in the archive.)

Thanks again for the shots.

Best regards

Gary

P.S.

Was there any water flowing in the tributaries of the Cooper yet?

The 'glory' results from light scattering of single, sub-millimetre to millimetre-sized spheres in the exact backscattering direction (Lenke, R., Mack, U., Maret, G. (2002) "Comparison of the 'glory' with coherent backscattering of light in turbid media.",Journal of Optics A: Pure and Applied Optics; Volume 4, Issue 3, May 2002, Pages 309-314)

Thanks everyone, The Cooper is running, they think they will get the high point in another few weeks. They are saying the water may make it to lake Eyre.

Kev,

Wow, that dune shot is something else. I would love to see that with my own eyes.

Great work!
