Vista BSOD

Just a note that may be of use to those who have Vista.

My quad core machine recently started intermittently throwing up a Blue Screen of Death and shutting down.

Some googleing revealed that it's a common problem caused by security centre alerts.

After telling security centre to not notify the BSOD problem is now gone.

It's little wonder with bugs like this that Vista has been nicknamed the new ME and one third of Vista users apparently have downgraded to XP. If I didn't need Vista to make the most of the Quad core CPU it would be gone in a flash.

I turn off anything I deem unnecessary in Vista, and that includes the alerts. That way, there's less chance of Vista going FUBAR.

There's gotta be a reason that yours has suffered them... what was security actually complaining about?

You seem to have the lucky touch, Chris. Some people never seem to have any problems with an OS and yet many others do. Must be in the wrist, mate. You're hitting the keys on the keyboard at the right angle!!!

You must be right! My desktop machine runs brilliantly (touch wood) and has honestly been running for over a year without being restarted, except for critical software updates that require it. My laptop has had a couple of nigglies, but nothing I'd get upset over to the point of needing to discuss it with anyone.

Chris, the BSOD appeared after recently downloading some updates, it's a widely reported problem, I can live with it, as once the Security Centre notification is turned off there are no further problems.

It's s shame Vista is as flaky as it is, I installed an application on 2 different Vista machines last week, on one the app ran like a swiss watch, the other refused to run despite identical installation steps. I've seen that sort of inconsistency on several occasions.

Yeah - that's a bit whacky Phil - installing on two machines and hving different probs with common software. Gotta be hardware dependant. I'm sure if it had happened to me I'd be snakey too. I must be lucky because my run with it on my two desktop machines has been issue-free. I just enjoy the speed!

Is this the AVG anti-spyware compatability problem that you're referring to? Not sure that it's Vista's issue or AVG's?

Vista isnt the best O/S ever, that said, Vista with SP1 is hugely better, and much much more stable.

i use a variety of O/S on my equipment.

I must say that I've been running Vista for over a year now on my laptop.
I have not encountered a single problem in all this time (touchwood) and this includes loading and running a lot of Astro programs for imaging and processing of which I have read on some USA forums cannot be loaded or used or in the least have had massive problems.

One thing that I did read somewhere was that the version that is loaded onto laptops is a load of rubbish and is missing quite a few of the required drivers while the boxed off the shelf version that I bought is the full bottle.

No I don't run AVG, I use Avast, as I said the problem appeared after doing some updates. Which ones, I haven't bothered to track down, I simply can't be bothered chasing bugs any more than is necessary nowdays.

I'm still impressed with the speed and general stability of 64 Bit Ultimate, with Photoshop it hums along very nicely, with image sizes getting larger you need all the processing power you can get. Getting apps to run hasn't been all that difficult, usually nothing more than setting to install in XP compatibility mode and running the install with Admin priviledges.

The preinstalled O/S tends to come with everything all done driver wise, although they tend to be full of bloatware, and stuff on there what you really dont need. I have 3 laptops, and 4 PC's at home, but then again, i would, as i am a computer engineer

There were some system updates issued recently that went awry after they were loaded as they did something weird to some anti-spyware, antivirus packages including (mostly) AVG. It's the only reason I mentioned it...

Well after a previous thread of mine regarding my frustration with Vista I now have a duel boot set up with Vista and XP.
I have loaded all my software ,drivers and planetarium programs on XP and all is running fine BUT Vista crashed again with a blue screen error message after only installing a serial to USB adapter.
So upgrading to XP on my laptop seems to be a winner so far.
I kept Vista only to test programs in comparison to xp and it failed with flying colours on the first go.

What's the difference?
If XP is running it all smoothly and Vista is not then it's obvious .
The serial to USB adapter is the only thing I tried on Vista so far, I still have not even got as far as loading any major programs and drivers and yet and the wheels fell off vista.
