Looks like a good night to view Comet Lulin (east coast)

Hope the weather holds up for tonight, I'm looking forward to catching a glimpse of comet Lulin.
Haven't seen it yet because of this awful weather.

After seeing the wonderful images on here, I'm hoping to have a go at it myself.

There's an afternoon storm expected, but as long as it clears in time for the transit and the comet, I'll be happy.

The storm last night lasted until midnight and then rained the rest of the night!

Matey, how are you ?
I'm into my busy period once again, tonight is my only chance to setup.

I can't keep up with the grass either, it's unbelievable.

Hope you have a great night and get some pics !

was ready to go last night, as I've the day off today.
Gave up around 1am.
Hoping it clears tonight. With a 5am start, might not get any sleep!

It was beautifully clear here last night and I found it with my new (bought yesterday) binoculars. I did not realise it would be such a white fuzzball - that's what comes of looking at those gorgeous clear and close telescope photos which show the green.

I'd planned to go out to do some photos (we have light pollution from the Gold Coast airport at home and I have to drive ) but I had a migraine.

Hoping to get some photos tonight, using the 28-300 lens on the 30D and keep zooming in.

And in Melbourne we have either bush-fire smoke and/or cloud cover. Methinks there are a lot of new scopes out there promoting the "Astronomers Curse".

Good luck one and all with your comet chasing.

In the off chance Sydney's cloud maker does the right thing, and has their rostered day (or night) off, I might venture down to the Royal National Park at some point tonight and take my binos with me. I was in Canberra last weekend and left the telescopes and cameras down there so there will not be any imaging from me on this one.

Good luck again and keep the images rolling.

Clear skies and crossed fingers and toes.

Karen.
Setting isn't the problem as it will set after sunrise. It is more when it rises which is still pretty late- about midnight.
Take a look here http://www.cometchasing.skyhound.com/

Hi,

The newspapers on the Sunshine Coast say the comet will be best viewed at 1am however when I look at the location of the comet on Feb Skymaps printout it shows the path of the comet over a number of days. Today it shows the comet just near Saturn on the 24th. Saturn rises just after 7pm tonight so should the comet also rise with Saturn at that time or will it literally rise later and move to the position on the skymap by the 1am time. Do they move that fast????? Possibly a dmb question.

Mark

Hi Mark,
Although Lulin is moving very quickly, after all it is very close to us, I think about half the distance of Mars at the moment.

It will rise tonight just before Saturn and will lead Saturn across the sky, however visually it will maintain a relatively constant separation from Saturn all night.

You need to look through a telescope to really see the movement of Lulin relative to the background stars.

Regards
Trevor

Hey Geoff,

Ive got a robotic electric mower on IceTrade that will help you fix that up! Much better than the goat Eric suggested, wont eat your washing either!

Cheers

Thankyou Trevor. I'm set up with my W/O110 and am thinking about trying to guide on the comet itself. See how I go.

You should have np with the DBK Mark, that's how I'm going to do it, plus a few subs of the starfield without trailing to set it against.
