Little critter

Went camping on the weekend to Expedition NP. Was cleaning out the fireplace to get a fire going when this little frog jumped out of the ashes. It was around 50mm long by 40mm wide. Unfortunately the camera doesnt do it justice as the markings on its body had a slight bluish tint.
Had to encourage it not to return to the fireplace a couple of times.
Still trying to identify.

Certainly an unusual and ugly critter, well caught Adrian.

Ugly it is not (just my opinion)!! Looks like some kind of burrowing frog, perhaps a shoemaker (although I dont think they usually live in QLD). Did you notice if it had glans on its back legs or anywhere else?

A good site for frog identification is http://frogs.org.au/

I agree it is not ugly. We try to encourage frogs in our back yard. I didnt notice if it had glands on it at all. I think you are right it is a burrowing frog as it was under about 4 inches of ash in the fireplace, about 100m from any water and I am happy that I cleaned the firplace out first before I lit a fire, I am not partial to frogs legs.
I will have a look at the website and if I cant identify it I will send a picture to the experts.

Hi Adrian,

Maybe it's a Pobblebonk, I think there are quite a few different ones. We have seen the Crimson sided pobblebonk in our yard on occasions it burrow and they have claws on there toes.
