I managed to get a lot more data with 16x(2min and 4min) exposures at 800 ISO without any Moon. Added to this to the earlier data.

As you can see more data means less noise and the faint bits get a bit clearer.

Faint bits are good.

Not sure if you can extract much more from this image Bert. Your previous rendition was remarkable. I like this one as well, but think the background looks a little too light. Perhaps raise the blackpoint to improve the contrast, though I don't think it'll go far given nebulosity fills nearly the entire frame. Good stuff.

Jase I would really like to try my HDR method with some RC data. Maybe next time you collect a high dynamic range target you take sets of exposures at least two stops apart. One stop is better. It would not be much more expensive as the shorter exposures do not take long. The short exposures should not allow ANY star to near saturation. Even at sixteen bits you will be surprised how little this takes.

The other real advantage is you can collect images at far longer exposures to get the faint bits as any saturation is immaterial!

Have you seen those faint bits before so clearly and natural with the Trap in the one image? I havent. When they are there the contrast etc has blown out all other detail. The masking methods introduce even more artefacts. Self referential systems fall apart with too much feedback!

Have to agree with you bert, your result is indeed very smooth and natural looking. Around the trap the stars look like they are floating.

I have certainly seen images with more vibrancy and resolution form a similar type of scope (all be they higher end and more expensive pieces ) but your effort does look quite pleasant, nicely subtle and natural.
