I cant believe I took images of Pelicans

As some of you know I have always given the guys a hard time about imaging Pelicans on this forum and yep I have done the same....I am ashamed..sorry

Anyway.

Got the Canon 70-200 F2.8 L today so I took it for a burn with the 40D I still dont know what I am doing and still playing around on AV with aperture.

Most of these were taken at the 200mm range handheld F2.8-F3.2 approx 1/5000 sec the F3.2 images were 1/2000 sec

Please comments welcomed as I need to learn and they a far from perfect not that I thought they would be.

hahah Sheeny

Thanks Dave, When you say the whites are blown out does that mean the exposure's are too long how can I improve this.
I suppose your suggesting to get away from some of the auto settings and go manual and watch the histogram...am I right.

that would help
yeah when you over expose the whites (or under expose blacks) you loose all the detail in that area permantently. if you shoot for the whites and use levels and/or curves to balance the ddarker colours you will end up with more detail and a better ballanced picture.

also what metering mode did you use? changing that may also help....

i just checked your exif and youhave the exposure bias set to +1.33 which is really high. bring it down to zero and if its under exposing too much bring it up to +0.3 or +0.7 maximium....

hope this helps

Yeah, as David mentioned, bring down the exposure bias to get the whites balanced nicely, then using either curves or shadows/highlights balance the rest of the image to suit..

Other than that, you have yourself a very nice bit of equipment there, make sure to feed it plenty of photons to make it grow up big and strong

Great sharp focus on your images to.

Ps. I thought Mike had already banned pelican photos

Alex.

Very nice pics Tony!
But I think there are hidden meanings behind all those birds!
Like Seagull, running chickens and Swans
