Start my new job next week!

This week is my last week at my current job.. and I start the new one next week. It's actually a different job than the one I told you about last time - I accepted a different job, it's in the city (

) down William St (get off at Town Hall).

Working in the city will be quite a change.. catching the train each day. I'll be one of those commuters, standing at the same spot on the station, get the same seat each day, and wonder why the hell I took this job the first day the train is late or stuck on the harbour bridge!

But I can use the time on the train to work on IceInSpace, process images, read a book or listen to podcasts. So it's not all bad.

I'll get a new laptop, but i'll have to give my current one back on Friday! So that means the weekend without a laptop, when the weather forecast is for clear skies!! noooooo! I'll try and convince them to let me hand it back on Monday.. or even to let me buy it out (it's 3+ years old anyway).

Anyway should be fun..

G'day Mike

Nice one mate! It's always nice to have a change around the beginning of the year too. I'm also starting a new job/study in a couple of weeks and really looking forward to the change. I'm contemplating whether to drive or train it in.... I drive to work now but up the coast to Gosford, so it works out being against the traffic both ways. Nice and peaceful usually catching the last of the sunrise on the way in. The new position is near Strathfield and takes twice as long to drive half the distance... So I thinking train too at this stage!

You could always do your image processing on the train and look like a real nerd! And don't forget to make really LOUD phone calls too, everyone really cares about how important you are that people can't wait for you to get to work. Oh, also remember to take the MP3 player and turn it up loud too...you may as well entertain everyone else on the train!

Hope you enjoy your new job. I was in my last (first) one for 25 years and loved the first 20 years.

Of course, as an astronomer and stay up all night kinda guy, you'll also have to master the art of falling asleep on the train and waking up just before your stop. Snoring is optional....

Good luck with the new job Mike. The best thing I found about starting a new job was the “honeymoon period” where everything was new; the place, the people, the processes, the products and services, etc.

It would then take up to a couple of years for the naivety and wide eyed wonder to wear off before you got to see the politics, in-fighting, swollen ego’s, dirty tricks, etc, reminding you why you quit your last job!

Hopefully you can get a train that terminates at central so someone can wake you up. I did this for years going to uni.

Mike a change is always exciting and working in the city of Sydney has its advantages...

I walked from the Power House Museum to catch the train at Town Hall on the 2nd of this year and have walked from the other Museum to Town Hall .. so you have those opportunities if you can plan you day... before after or during work... you are close to many camera shops and they can be as interesting as a museum I find... you are lucky to have all that time on the train... it is real personal time, enjoy it, as you have the perfect excuse not to be someplace else... remain calm as there are many things that delay trips and cause frustration... it is a perfect time to realise one can not control everything.

Be careful of your new workmates as for a while you may feature in their politics... and above all have no regrets .. everything we do is part of our destiny.

good stuff...............now to download all those drivers and astro programs you use all the time, but forgot where you got them from

I know! That's the problem.. re-installing all the astro programs, capture programs, processing programs, etc.

Even if they let me keep my current laptop, it'll have to be formatted so I have to do it again anyway.

I just got word that they'll let me buy out my current laptop (for $20!). Which is great!

They're still going to wipe it (on Friday sometime), so I need to re-install XP and all my astrophotography capture programs before Friday night when I plan to go imaging!!! argh!

I made a list of all the astronomy programs I need/use, and it comes to about 40!!! Wow, that's a lot.

However i've prioritised them into programs I need JUST for Friday night, and that comes to about 10, including Windows XP, Canon Driver Software, Images Plus (camera capture), Raw Shooter Premium, Starry Night, PHD Guiding, IC-Capture.AS, AlsICCA, and Photoshop.

That'll get me going

The format is happening about 9:30am Friday so will give me a few hours (in-between goodbye lunches and afternoon teas) to install some stuff

mike have you got nortons ghost or similar that way you can burn the lot and restore ?

unless it really needs a format ?

Definitely an option, but it's got a lot of work stuff (and the work XP image) which I'm happy to get rid of and start clean.

Mike, you could buy or borrow a 2nd laptop hdd and put it in and build XP on it now. Install everything you need that way you can be ready to go.
