Are you a Squinting Observer?

We have had polls before about whether you visually observe with your left or right eye (or both) but another point to discover is:

Are you a squinter or an open eye observer with your other eye?

When looking with your favoured eye, what do you do with the other eye? Do you leave it open (maybe with an eyepatch) or do you squint it up?

I am a squinter. Always have been and I find it hard and uncomfortable to leave the other eye open, covered or uncovered.

Yes, I have to keep my other eye shut. I have tried keeping it open but it is uncomfortable. I also sometimes try the other eye, but cant see so well. I have been meaning to get an eyepatch for ages, but I will really need it for the good eye 'cos I frequently hop inside for something and bang goes my night vision. I sometimes close my good eye on such occasions, but usually end up banging into something!

For a black plastic protective eyecover held in place with an elastic band around my head, $3.95 from the pharmacy. Well worth trying.

Squinter here.

I've tried the hand over the eye, the eyepatch and both eyes open.

I always go back to the squint.

Don't Know what your talking about here, I only image, but i do have to look through my right eye to focus, dose that count.

There is no "I observe with both eyes" option.

Yeah, Leon, I use my eye for observing less & less these days. Only on Club nights and if I used the 12" at home. I do mostly imaging.

for planets (ie joop) i go both eyes open the image actually apears on the outside of the tube which i has stuck felt onto. i see more detail this way some how and it looks... i dont know, 3d almost.

faint stuff i close the other eye or use an eyepatch.

Total Squinter for Astro work - visual or imaging!
Don't mind it really!
But, I look down a binocular microscope 9-5 everyday and I know the pleasure of the stereo view!!
Just wish the binoviewer option wasn't so damn difficult on a budget!
I know you can buy a $200 binoviewer - but it won't focus on the budget setup I have without extension tubes/ barlows etc which pushes up the magnification and takes the views out of the widefield experience I wish to have with a binoviewer!!
I'd like to use a binoviewer at 15-20x with a 150mm + scope, hassle free.

ps... really with leon on this one - committed imager now - I only have a 15mm Superview and 3x barlow for visual stuff!!!!

I find during photographing when i am guiding through a high power eyepiece i'm there for a long time, so i use an eye patch, but visually observing comets etc i use both methods, depending on how comfortable i feel......
When i use a straight through finder i keep both eyes open to line up on a star before star-hopping......

One eye shut for me, I must admit up until now I have never thought about it.

Must try a patch one day and see if there is any difference.

Ken I've only recently let the laptop into my imaging setup.
It's an uneasy alliance at present!!
Up till now my imaging has been a point and click affair!!
Now I've got wires everywhere and bright laptop screens to stuff things up too!!!

On a more serious note Ken...
I use a freeware program to dim the screen - "DarkAdapted" and decrease the screen brightness fully.
Do you guys use a red plastic filter or what!?

Phil, that was covered in another poll about a year ago. This poll is whether you observe with one eye shut or both open.

Left, right or both doesn't matter in this case

If you use Binoculars only, or Bino EP's only, obviously you would keep both eyes open (well you'd think so anyway)
