Just to tidy up the ambiguity about Q1 for all you cosmic yardstick fanatics out there.
The original question for Q1 was: What is the Period-Luminosity Relationship?
However, the multiple choice answers were far too lengthy for the format of the quiz.
To keep answers short, I modified the question to read: Who discovered the Period-Luminosity Relationship of Cepheid variables? Except during editing, I somehow lost the crucial text, Period-Luminosity Relationship.
Those who answered Henrietta Swan Leavitt must have (correctly) inferred that I intended the question to read Period-Luminosity Relationship. But, without that qualifying reference to the Period-Luminosity Relationship, my reference sources indicated that all the choices have a strong historical association with Cepheid variables: - Henrietta Swan Leavitt discovered the Period-Luminosity Relationship of Cepheid variables.
- Edwin Hubble used the 100" telescope at the Mount Wilson Observatory to detect variable stars in nebulae. He discovered that the stars he observed had the same characteristic variations in their brightness as a class of stars called Cepheid Variables.
- Harlow Shapley used the period-luminosity relationship for Cepheid variable stars to determine distances to globular clusters.
- Ejnar Hertzsprung found the distance to the Small Magellanic Cloud, the first distance to an object outside the Milky Way, by using the delta-Cephei type of variable stars.
So, the (intended) full question: Who discovered the Period-Luminosity Relationship of Cepheid variables? has only one correct answer from the list of names, that being Henrietta Swan Leavitt. But, given the incomplete wording, Mike has marked all entries as correct.
Cheers
Dennis

Well done to the organisers. I'm happy with 27 and the 3 entries. Bring on the draw.

I've organised with York Optical to do the draw in the week starting 8th October. Once a date is finalised I'll let everyone know.
Sorry I can't do it next week but I literally won't be around or have the time.

Hi All
Whoa just checked my score, 30/30 Great quiz and loved it. Gave me a chance to use some of my trusty newly acquired library of astronomy which comprises of 20 or so DVDs, Practical Skywatching ISBN1 876778 91-1 which I find a great asset and Gosford library, brought back memories of school, NO GOOGLE.

Thanks again for the brain tease Mike.
27/30 wrapped! Personally I found Q1 worded fine, you just had to read it. There was only one discoverer, all the others only used an already known star type for thier own research.
Anyway well done all and bring on the draw.

Hi Netwolf
Sorry for the tardy response and thanks, the series comes from one of these DVD collections by a company called IMP. I have 25 with scores to go. I thought, "here we go again" a couple to get you in them wait for the onslaught, but it's not like that at all you can cease your collecting and re-establish whenever you like.

I understood Q1 just fine as well. It's nice to be reminded about the successful female Astronomers.
Vash, I know it feels a bit like cheating using Google, but one of the aims of the quiz is to stimulate your mind and encourage research.
I only looked up the questions that I absolutely didn't know the answers to, but took my best shot at the questions that I thought I knew.

I might sound dumb, but how do you know your scores?
Have they been listed somewhere that I can't see?

Sandy, as was said earlier in this thread:-
"Go to the quiz page and it will show you your answers, along with the correct answers. At the bottom of the page it shows you how many you got right."
Just pretend you are doing the quizz again and ..... Ooh! The link has gone from the left hand side of this page? Hmmmm?
Edit:- OK, try this link:- http://www.iceinspace.com.au/index.p...73,427,0,0,1,0

I got like 17 out of 30 and didn't use google. I think the people who admitted to using google should be disqualified as quizzes I've taken in the past were often not open book. Using google in my opinion was cheating on this quiz.
Ah well, to each their own.

Given the audience the quiz was aimed at - amateurs, it would have been too difficult without googling IMO - anyway, it is a good learning experience for us am's to look the stuff up.....

There's absolutely no problem in using google. It's not cheating.
It's called research.
I'd rather people "research" and get the right answer, than "guess" and get the wrong answer.
The aim of the quiz is to hopefully get people to perhaps learn something they didn't know before. It doesn't matter to me how they get there.
