We’ve just returned from a few days at Mooloolaba. Managed to catch a few waves, visit Underwater World and also take in Australia Zoo (a la Steve Irwin). We had a lovely time, but I missed my daily fix of IceInSpace, although I was rather brave and hid the anguish from my darling wife!
The ocean was a balmy 20 deg C and we had a couple of days where the air temps hit 30 deg C; ‘twas almost summer like.
Good to be back and thanks for your kind thoughts.
‘Twas nice to be missed! Not too sure if I am being watched over, or “watched over” a la George Orwell!
Managed to grab a few piccies but didn’t take the tripod so most long shots suffered from a combination of hand shake, mirror slap vibes and poor lens performance at the wide open end of the Pentax kit lenses. Not to mention operator errors! It was very tricky shooting in Underwater World – dark, through scratched glass and heaps of reflections to contend with. The Giant Squid measure 7 metres from tip of tentacles to end of body – yikes! It was frozen in a slowly thawing 3 ton block of ice after being caught in NZ.
My experience has got me thinking more seriously about investing in better quality glass, maybe with the IS or VR of the Canon & Nikon lenses respectively. I saw one guy with a K10D and his LCD put my piddly *ist DS 1.8” to shame…
nice images Dennis, like the elephant!! Well you felt and shot through the K10D at Duckadang, and saw the nice sigma lens i had for it, (both) but I can hear the canon calling you and the L series lenses...........
Yep – I’m slowly explaining to Narelle the crippling limitations of our current system and how I would feel totally fulfilled (for at least 18 months, or until the next model arrives ) with a Canon 40D + swag of L lenses, or a Nikon D300 and the equivalent swag of VR lenses…
You are a bad, very bad influence on me Mr H0ughy.

Remind me to send your wife a happy astronomers aniversary card when the time comes around again Dave. You know, the one with the photo of you and your trailer and the marque de cirque de sole` on the front

It’s not that we don’t love you, but holidays is holidays. And for that matter, we were responsibly minimising our carbon footprint by leaving the car in the underground car park . The walk to the beach was quite gruelling though…all of 50 metres!
